There are quite a few players in the wireless arena. There is two wireless fronts emerging.

1. Fixed wireless (Wireless local loop) which generally consists of companies using spread spectrum (radio frequency) technology. Essentially when I say fixed in this category the devices or the wireless connections are restricted to a local area (usually a matter of miles). This is used in lets say connecting office "a" to office "b" or perhaps office "a" to the internet etc. The speeds for these connections are becoming fairly high. What we see in this area would be companies giving up their expensive high speed T1 etc. connections between themselves and lets say their internet connection, or the expensive connections between a corporations offices (connect the comapanies LAN (local area network) between building "a" and building "b") and other applications such as an ISP (Internet service provider) providing wireless access to its local customers and eliminate the wired (telco/cable) connection to the internet service provider. Although a little more complex than this generally it is restricted to a specific area depending on the individual hardware choices etc. The connections attained here are high speed and can easily compete and exceed in many areas the existing wired connection speeds. For a list (and don't let the length scare you) of companies working on this technology go to this page

2. The second area of wireless communications is the mobile wireless. Basically this arena involves wireless/cellular technology. This involves wirelessly connecting Laptops, PDA's, handheld devices, organizers, pagers, cell phones, etc. to information for people on the go (travelling, moving around larger areas etc.) It enables say travelling salesman John Doe to send and receive emails etc. from lets say his laptop to his business associates etc. while travelling, or receive stock quotes etc. while he is travelling. The thing about this section is that it is mobile. It is not restricted to a local area other than that which is restricted by the cellular or satellite cellular coverage of a cellular data network. The other difference is that the bandwidth or rate at which data can be transferred is significantly lower than item 1 above. One site to perhaps start looking at general companies and the sector cna be found here:

dir.yahoo.com

Both of these areas have very distinct advantages and uses. I would not say they compete with each other. In some area's the technology crosses and they actually compliment each other. The fact is is that alone and together they eliminate alot of the requirements for wired infastructure (phone lines, cable lines, etc.). Any person seriously interested in the wireless industry should really look into both sectors. The above is a very very basic description of the sectors. There is much more to it than just what I have said and each can get very complicated. A basic understanding of each of the sectors should be attained first. From there one can delve into the differing sectors and more specifics.

There is alot of information (enough to keep you reading for the rest of your life) on the net. Just go to Yahoo and type in wireless and start searching. IMHO (In my humble opinion) any substantial research into this industry will pay back big time in regard to future returns on investments big time, Im not saying that you can just piuck a company and it will make you rich) Im saying that if you do your industry homework, sacrifice the time of learning, educate yourself, follow the news and keep your ears to the ground there is a very good possibility you will make some good money investing in wireless. I guess it depends on how good and how detailed your research is.

This is why I said Dick West post was simply silly. Take a look at the list of companies in WaveRiders sector given on the fixed link. One company comes out with a news release and he say's goodbye to WaveRider? He'd have to say goodbye to them all as well by making that statement. Nobody can say who is going to be the winner yet. Nobody can discount anyone! There will be more than one winner in this area. My hopes are that WaveRider is one of them, the smart investor will pick more than one. The stupid investor will pick just one and dicount the rest of the crowd. Im more than happy that good news is coming out in the sectors from many companies. It is raising the level of awareness and information of the wireless arena in general.

Sorry for the length of the post. I do not make recommendations for anyone to buy into any one company. I recommend they look at some, but never instruct people to buy anything, likewise you will find a total absense of price predictions in my posts. Hope this helps you to start your search. Iam not versed on every company in the industry as well. There is alot of knowledge out their, happy reading.

Good luck
