Chaz, Perhaps the upcoming UMTS 99 event will tell us
some of what we'd like to know. See my previous post.
Mardy

The conference will address the evolution of 3G from a global perspective and cover developments on standardization progress and activities. Representatives from the software, broadcast, IT and computing, and content provision communities will also be there to discuss UMTS opportunities. There will be a focus on services and applications along with detailed coverage of the latest developments in terminals, air interface, core network, and system and services architecture.

Ericsson will be a lead sponsor at the conference, including for the gala dinner. Ericsson's small exhibition will highlight 3G applications and terminals, and include GPRS/EDGE and WCDMA live demonstrations.

Speakers

Tord Wingren on future services and applications within UMTS (June 10, Session A6)
Håkan Ihrfors on service differentiation with UMTS in practice (June 9, Session A5)
Jan Eldståhl on validation System Trial Results (June 9, Session B5)
Thomas Sidenbladh on licensing issues (Chairman, June 9, Session C5)

Chaz,

What does harmonization mean in the real world?
Well it seems there aint none! The three parts of CDMA is exactly what certain suppliers, except Qcom, wanted. The philosophy seems to be that if they keep saying harmonization and three "modes" we will all eventually believe it. It looks likely at the present time that there will also be 2 chip rates, also something that certain suppliers have wanted, except Qcom.

The specs are supposed to be finalised by around November and don't forget IS-136/EDGE is another one. Only for new entrants would a contest between the various specs be of particular interest. The two main proposals will each find the markets they were designed for, i.e., what remains of the WCDMA (UMTS) will be more probably sold to the GSM markets (even though it is WCDMA it has a similar protocol structure as GSM has) and what remains of the cdma2000 proposal to the IS-95 (cdmaOne) markets.

The cost for GSM operators going the IS-95 to cdma2000 route would be just too much, not to mention the costs to the subscriber needing new phones (remember WCDMA will mainly be deployed around the world in new radio spectrum to run along side GSM...of course this wont happen in the US. If I have an opportunity at having a go at the FCC I will always take it...Hundt failed).

Even for new entrants, the choice wont be easy. If, like in the UK, a new law is passed to make sure any new entrant can roam on existing 2G networks (as their own network is rolled-out), then you'll have to have multimode phones. Here I expect there will be more WCDMA/GSM phones than any other type.

The UMTS 99 conference starts next week in Monte Carlo, unfortunately my work commitments prevent me from going, but i hope to get some comments from my journalist friends attending (I'll report back if anything noteworthy is mentioned).

Actually it has been a while since I last made a call on a WCDMA system and hope Ericsson ask me again soon, as they should have boosted the data rate up on the original test network by now.

Gotta dash, it' 18:45 and I am still in the office (sad git that I am).

I'm going for a beer now, so Cheers!
Mika
