Bill Guthridge proved it again last week. NC whipped a more experienced, more physical and more talented team. Coach Gutt's game plan was flawless. What other coach in the U.S. would have won the NIT this year with the inexperienced squad Coach Gutt has? Don't get me wrong, there are a number of great coaches in the country (Williams, Smith, K, Olsen, Knight, Boheim, Thompson) but it is time Coach Gutt got the respect he has long deserved.
Anyone who has watched the Heels play this year knows that there are significant holes. Inconsistent outside shooting, reliance on youth, players who have not played long together, lack of a superstar and thin bench. But Coach Gutt and his staff got his team ready to play at the level that Carolina is used to. Some feared that the corps were so depleted this year that the Heels were looking at what Duke went through a few years ago and failed to make the NCAA tourney. Don't worry about that, Coach Gutt is on a different level.
The Heels might not win the conference (Duke is deep and Maryland is better than it has ever been), but you can rest assured that the Heels are in good hands with Coach Gutt as they ever were with the Dean of all Deans!!!
