I've seen sporadic mention of Netzero on other threads and I thought I'd find out if there was more general interest in it and the free ISP concept. I think it will definitely change the operating model for small players like Prodigy (which is trying to go public after MORE THAN A DECADE of lackluster operations) and even Mindspring and Earthlink.

Apparently Netzero needed to pass the 100,000 mark to make it worthwhile for advertisers to start paying attention. I believe they have over 200,000 now although they have largely marketed by word of mouth and have only been operating for a few months. If they can scale up to 1,000,000 they will really give everyone (aol included) a scare. It's also possible that if they achieve great success or are quickly copied the roll out of DSL and CABLE (perhaps the future for aol & athm) will be stymied as subscribers decide they shouldn't pay for net connections.

Anyway, in my brief experience with the service it has been reliable and the mandatory banner size advertising window hasn't bothered me in xga (1024x768) screen resolution because I can fit it into the unused portion at the upper right hand side of my netscape browser window. I have actually tinkered with a few sites that I've been directed to upon start up but I have yet to click on the banner. I may decide to buy their stock if they do an IPO with the money I'll save by cancelling my $19.95 ISP.

Here is one link to an article. to find more info seach for netzero at metacrawler.com or the usual suspects like news.com
