MONTREAL, Feb. 11 /CNW-PRN/ - Planet 411 is a new Internet concept aimed
at optimizing the way the world finds information, interacts and does
business on the World Wide Web. The concept is to create a network of
virtual cities that are a replica of the world's major cities. These
Internet cities will allow activities that would normally take days to
accomplish in the physical cities to be done in only minutes in their
virtual counterparts. Each city is being created with an emphasis on the
Internet's most practical applications: information, transactions and
interactions.
Anyone accessing a Planet 411 virtual city will have access to a host of
information, such as the city's local news, business directory, job
banks, airport information, TV listings and much more. The information
made available in each city will be kept city specific and carefully
structured, allowing for a quick and easy user-friendly way to get
information. Planet 411 essentially offers an alternative and much more
effective method to find information when compared with the Internet's
current search engines.
From a transactional standpoint, Planet 411's virtual cities will allow
people to do their banking, trade stocks, and purchase a number of goods
and services, which include everything from groceries to airline
tickets.
In each virtual city, local merchants will be invited to set-up virtual
city storefronts. These businesses will benefit from the traffic
generated by the exciting multimedia features found in each virtual
city. They will be able to sell their products and services to local as
well as foreign consumers, making each city an attractive and efficient
virtual marketplace.
Planet 411, for a monthly fee, plans to offer its merchant partners
complete electronic commerce solutions, which include everything from
software to shipping. Planet 411 will also provide, at no additional
cost, customer service on behalf of its merchant partners. Therefore,
consumers shopping in any of Planet 411's virtual cities can contact
Planet 411's customer service department if they are not completely
satisfied with their shopping experience. This should bring credibility
to smaller merchants and entrepreneurs who wish to sell online as well
as take away some of the consumer worries about shopping at unreliable
sites.
Interactivity will be prominently featured in each of Planet 411's
virtual cities. There will be business forums where manufacturers,
suppliers, importers, exporters, and distributors from local or
international companies can meet and discuss business opportunities,
partnerships or other topics. Local residents of each city will be
invited to actively take part in a section of their virtual city labeled
''Your Community'', which they will be encouraged to shape and mold to
reflect their own real world community. This section will feature
organized online events, games, chat rooms, and electronic bulletin
boards. Planet 411 will also provide free e-mail accounts in the hopes
of bringing communities closer together and increase Internet activity.
Planet 411 plans to franchise virtual replicas of every major city in
the world. The company plans on creating these cities in collaboration
with the franchise purchasers, local businesses and residents to ensure
an accurate representation and feel of each city. The Canadian cities of
Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are on schedule to be launched in May
1999. Major strategic alliance discussions are currently underway with
each city's local media and companies such as RE/MAX (real estate) and
Uniglobe Travel.
In addition to its network of virtual cities, Planet 411 also offers a
variety of Internet services. Planet 411 recently signed a $1.8 million
contract with a Montreal-based company to create a Life Sciences &
Biomedical Network on the Internet that will facilitate the
communication and sharing of information between industry scientists.
