Currently mp3 files the leading format for the exchange of music over the internet. While the big labels are incredibly scared by this unregulated transmission over the net mp3.com hopes to grow and prosper by embracing the change. I don't think the general public knows when mp3.com will do an ipo yet but you can bet if the market frenzy keeps up for another few months they will soon have their offering. See this article from cnet: news.com There are several other threads on SI that will give you some background on .mp3 files and associated technology: Subject 25926 Subject 26130 Subject 22861 mp3.com signs artists to non exclusive contracts and gives them a much larger cut of sales than traditional labels. They may not bring any huge new acts onto the scene soon but I think their strategies are essential to democratizing music. This disintermediation in the music industry should give artists and fans a much closer relationship. I hope new artists who produce music fans appreciate will have a much easier time spreading their music and attracting concert goers (cheap and free music distribution doesn't seem to hurt the Grateful Dead). In the process investors in mp3.com may make big bucks! | ||||||||||||
