Dear SI Members: As many of you know, we recently tried a unique experiment on SI, whereby we asked the community at-large to vote on whether or not a particular person should have his membership reinstated. We believe that the intent of such a process is directly in line with what we are trying to achieve with Silicon Investor, i.e. a true Web community. Most of you agreed, although some of you had some rather strong feelings about the specific process that we applied with the initial experiment. So, we've listened to what you had to say, and we've refined the process. Now, we'd very much like to hear what you have to say again. We've outlined the process below, and we'd like to use this thread to discuss the issue. Is this something that we should do at all? Yes/No? Are there further refinements that we can make to the process that will make it more effective and fair? Also, (and this is quite important) are there enough of you out there who would be willing to be "judges" under the format presented below. If you *are* willing to be a judge, please send an e-mail to SI-Judges@go2net.com with your Silicon Investor Alias. So, please let us know what you think about instituting an SI Community Vote Policy such as the following. Thanks, Bryan In certain circumstances, a terminated member would be considered for reinstatement by Community Vote. The process would operate as follows: - The terminated member must send a written request to be reinstated. The request would include a formal apology and indicate a sincere commitment to abide by the Terms of Use if reinstated. The terminated member would also provide any additional pertinent information or mitigating circumstances. - Such e-mails should be sent to a special e-mail box, i.e. SI-Review@go2net.com. - A Silicon Investor Review Board would review the request and determine whether a Community Vote would be warranted. The primary factors would include the severity and repetitiveness of the violations and an assessment of the sincerity of the member's intent to adhere to the Terms of Use going forward. The decision of the Review Board regarding whether or not a Community Vote should be held would be final. If a Community Vote is warranted, the process would continue as follows: - A Silicon Investor Site Administrator would post a notice announcing the vote in a special thread designated for that purpose. The initial post on that thread wouldinclude a summary of the reasons why the member was terminated. - The vote would be announced on the Silicon Investor Home Page. - The thread would be used for all interested members to provide input on whether the member in question should be reinstated or not. - The terminated member would be allowed to post one message in his/her own defense. The message would be submitted to and posted by a Silicon Investor Administrator on the terminated member's behalf. - Seven Silicon Investor Judges would be selected at random from a list of volunteers. The Judges would be contacted, and their participation would be confirmed. - The "voting thread" would be left active for five days. At the conclusion of the "voting period", the seven Judges wouuld submit a simple Reinstate/Don't Reinstate vote. The votes would be submitted via Private Message or e-mail to a special Profile/mailbox. - The votes would be tallied and a simple majority would determine reinstatement or not. - At all times, including after the vote has been rendered, the identities of the Judges would remain completely anonymous, unless they individually choose to reveal their identity. No Judge would know the identity of any other Judge. - Reinstatement notices would be posted in the appropriate discussion thread, but specific voting tallies would not be publicly communicated. | ||||||||||||
