Preview Systems lets you try before you buy. The company
(formed by the merger of Preview Software and Portland
Software) sells products that enable publishers, distributors,
and resellers to securely distribute trial versions of software,
music, video, and other digital goods via the Internet. The
company collects transaction fees from customers -- such
as Sony (45% of sales), Mattel, and Ingram Micro -- that use
its hardware and software to buy, sell, or distribute items.
Preview Systems' products support multiple licensing
programs, 14 languages, a digital encryption format
developed by Intel, and many operating and e-commerce
systems. Computer-related venture investor SOFTBANK
owns 10% of the company.
