GigaMedia is a leading provider of broadband Internet access services and content through its cable-based television network infrastructure in Taiwan. The company has access to more than 3.4 million households and 465,000 small- and medium-sized businesses. In addition to broadband access services, the Company also offers interactive multimedia content through its Web destination giga.net.tw. The site offers six interactive channels of Chinese-language content: music, entertainment, news, games, finance, freeware and TV programming sites.
Microsoft has a 10 percent stake in the company and a relationship with GigaMedia that includes operation of a co-branded portal based on Microsoft's MCIS server technologies. The two companies will also develop set-top box technologies enabling customers to log on to the Internet through their TV sets, as well as offering online shopping channels.
Another investor is the Koos Group, Taiwan's largest cable TV operator. The Koos Group owns a 75% stake in GIGM.
Major competitors include Chunghwa Telecom, HiNet, EraNet and AsiaCast on the broadband side and China.com, sohu.com, and sina.com on the content side.
Taiwan has one of the highest cable pentetration rates in the world, which rate was 77% as of Dec. 31, 1998.
