Currently there is great interest in companies that address the germ warfare issue that is facing our nation. Several companies that have products to detect or vaccines to inoculate for anthrax have had a major run-up in share prices. However, in my opinion, investors are over looking a related issue that not only has the immediate application, but implications to a worldwide issue that is here to stay. I am speaking of the safety of our food supply from being contaminated by germs. For example, just today we have news from Japan about the possibility of a mad cow disease outbreak there and also from Chile today we hear of patrons at a McDonalds suffering from an E coli outbreak:

10/11/2001 9:49:00 PM
TOKYO, Oct 12 (Reuters) - The following stocks are on the move on Friday.
**NIPPON MEAT PACKERS, YOSHINOYA DOWN ON REPORT OF MAD COW**
Major meat processor Nippon Meat Packers Inc (2282) down 10.15 percent or 122 yen at 1,080, the first section's biggest loser by percentage.
Select meat-related shares fell after the Jiji news agency said government sources had found another suspected case of mad cow disease in Tokyo. An escalation of suspected mad cow cases could spark a decline in consumption of their goods.
Also today we see the following:
Thursday October 11, 7:40 pm Eastern Time
Chile finds E.coli bacteria in McDonald's burgers
SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Chilean health authorities on Thursday said they found E.coli bacteria in chicken burgers sold by fast-food chain McDonald's (NYSE:MCD - news) that could produce infectious diarrhea and vomiting.
A stock that has caught my attention (and one that I own) is Surebeam (SURE). The following is basic information about this company and the service they provide to food processing companies here in the USA and worldwide:
“Food-borne pathogens are a global health problem and outbreaks cause immeasurable pain and suffering around the world. Food processors need a solution that will protect their customers.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 76 million Americans suffer illnesses from food-borne diseases leading to 325,000 hospitalizations and more than 5,000 deaths annually.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to dangerous food-borne illness and suffer more severe reactions.
SureBeam Corporation is the leading provider of patented electronic pasteurization systems and services for the food industry. The SureBeam electronic food pasteurization process significantly improves food safety, prolongs shelf life and provides disinfestation without compromising food quality.
The SureBeam® consumer and environmentally friendly process uses commercial electricity to generate a beam of accelerated electrons or convert electrons to X-rays, which are scanned over a product to achieve pasteurization or disinfestations in mere seconds. This process destroys harmful food-borne bacteria such as E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter and Salmonella in foods.
SureBeam Partnerships
SureBeam Corporation has found success through its growing list of partnerships. SureBeam Corporation's goal of providing consumers with the safest, most wholesome food available has been realized through partnerships with food companies such as American Foodservice Corporation, Anchor Food Products, Inc., Cargill/Excel, Del Monte Foods, Emmpak Foods, Hawaii Pride, Huisken Meats, IBP, Inc., SureBeam Brazil and Tyson, among others. SureBeam Food Processing partners command more than 75% of the US ground beef market and approximately 50% of the US poultry market.
Food safety, quality and wholesomeness are of the highest importance to SureBeam Corporation and we have found that establishing relationships with Educational Institutions is a very beneficial step for our existing and future partners. Although origins of this technology can be traced back for more than a century, we are constantly enhancing our intellectual property. With each test that is run, more is learned about the dynamics of different types of foods and packaging materials, but one of the largest benefits in partnering with educational institutions is the immeasurable amount of research and data that our Food Quality Specialists can access. Iowa State University, for example has operated a food pasteurization research facility since March 1993, and regularly offers training classes. In addition, SureBeam Corporation announced a ten-year strategic alliance with members of the Texas A&M University System. The A&M System members will be provided with a state-of-the-art SureBeam system that will include two electron beams and X-ray capabilities for the purpose of research, development and education of electronic food pasteurization. “
I would welcome a discussion of this company.
