Here's an interesting article from ZDNet about digital wallet standards:

zdnet.com

The author raises a valid point about how jockeying for a proprietary standard has hurt the current growth rate for e-commerce. Too bad Cybercash is such a piece of junk, because their technology seems very applicable to the solution.

John,

Thanks for your ideas regarding the standards battles. I'm particularly interested in your #3 category, fixed broadband wireless. With no standard and with each company involved making its own equipment, it sounds like the initial phase of a gorilla game, where eveyone's a chimp, trying to get a bigger piece of the market to standardize on their own equipment. But since we're talking about equipment, doesn't that warrant an entry (i.e. buy the basket) after the tornado has formed?

(Page 181):

If the category is enabling hardware or software, begin buying after the tornado has formed.

What I would like to do is figure out if the equipment suppliers are in their tornado phase.

<<I don't know who the equipment suppliers are.>>

Does anyone have an idea? Just one player is enough, because I can dig into its filings and find the whole list of competitors (it's required).
