This is particularly good news for the Ultra Workstation segment where Rambus would have been more of a threat - and Itanium (the disaster formerly known as Merced.)

Sun continues to drive prices down, offer 64 bit cpu's, 64 bit Solaris and RAS Microsoft will never deliver. I can scale my app from an Ultra2 to a 64 cpu Starfire without recompiling or breaking the architecture (if Sun keeps going up i may be able to buy one!) More importantly HP and IBM are disappearing from the Unix Workstation marketplace due to lack of investment - basically ceding the EDA, Mcad and sim market to Sun which are multi billion dollar growing businesses. Would you want to be the HP or IBM Exec explaining why you bet the farm on Microsoft and Intel?

If IA64 bombs out, all Sun management has to do is hint gently at their backlog numbers and we will see a triple-digit SUNW P/E (not that I know what a P/E is), and that's a ratio to substantially increased earnings. It will spell the disappearance of Wintel from servers and the end of the Wintel hegemony from the industry in general.

It's really interesting how different people can perceive the same set of facts so differently. To me and I suspect other SUNW bulls on this thread, one outcome, the one where the status quo shifts sharply in the year 2000, seems almost inevitable. To our bear friends, the inevitable outcome seems to be the diametrically opposite one, where the current leaders extend their lead.

Well, it will be an interesting year.

Regards,
