NuoMedia actually gets a decent proportion of traffic from ATHM right now, without their cooperation. Due to the ubiquity of the Internet, CASPs (I just made this one up - Consumer Application Service Providers) can capture quite a bit of the broadband vendor's constituency and cause stress on their networks without any allegiance to them whatsover. Think of how much Yahoo pays ATHM for thier broadband traffic - quite possibly nothing. This is a compelling reason why the broadband players should snatch up the young upstarts now. Overpaying at a low valuation is still less painful than ovepaying at a high valuation.

As for the performance over cable, my mother uses Cablevision's service (which is very fast BTW) and the application's speed is comparable or even faster than desktop apps. I may be biased of course. Their is an irritating latency over a 56k modem though.

I question if @HOME's market value is based on its future subs. A BB subscriber is more valuable than a dial-up because of the "potential" their access to the internet holds.

With a 56.6 dial up you connect to something that is revolutionizing the way we work and play. But your speed severely limits that revolution. With BB the revolution is unleashed. Thats where I think the larger valuation comes from.

@HOME has the chance to become more than the virtual desktop. It can become the virtual home. However, as you mentioned so can AOL.

side note: Maytag has a washer and dryer that uses Java and connects to the net. It runs self diagnostics and contacts Maytag if it finds a problem. Maytag sends the repairman.

Where does BB offer an advantage in the virtual home? Entertainment. Shopping (virtual shopping). Communications (video conferencing). Is BB needed for your fridge to call the grocery store when you are out of milk? I don't think so.

Hmm... what good are the benefits that BB may provide for a virtual desktop or virtual home, if you can take the home or desktop with you, but you can't take the BB?

Regards
Jay

PS. As I edit my spelling mistakes I am watching the Mars Polar Landing on Real Player. I love the Internet!

Hi Jay,

A little background on the ATHM situation. Starting in August of 1997 and ending Sept. '99, George Gilder included ATHM among his ascendant telecosm technologies. The company was removed because it was misdirected from a pipe shop to a content whore. Perhaps I'm wording it a tad strong, but in essence, @Home hopes to catch the hearts and minds of some slice of the Internet audience that I can't come close to relating to. I.e. those who really still want the passive spoon fed TV model. Why anyone would is beyond me.

As far as @Home's compelling technological advantage goes, in one man's opinion, they are throwing it away, by trying to adapt the dated infotainment format of the dinosaur media giants. Perhaps some @Home users can chime in here. Is the splash screen avoidable? Or have they used AOLs convention of making you creep through all their advertising garbage.

I'm on Roadrunner and delighted. They operate completely in the background and I have never seen their site. Don't have an need or interest. This is the way the Net should be presented.

Ciao, Ray
