Elmer,

Re: "Intel announcing 750MHz, 800MHz PIIIs?"

Damn ... AMD is leading technology stocks DOWN, off about 3.5% ... AMD
is really getting a "hosing off". <ggg> Next Monday could be even worse ??

Elmer, re:Intel announcing 750MHz, 800MHz PIIIs?

Pricewatch also seems to confirm better availability of top-end CuMines. Intel ready to flood the market with CuMines. Big price cuts coming next quarter. I wonder if AMD-ites starting to get worried <gg>

joey

Elmer - RE: "Yet more rumors. I'm not completely confident this is true but if it is, with CuMine's current performance lead over even the 750 MHz Athlon, and the fact that CuMine will scale much better with frequency, the gap will widen significantly."

Now THAT would be interesting. Only one Tier 1 733 PC on store shelves and Intel may already be announcing the 750 and 800.

If they do come out next week and PCs aren't on store shelves, it will be further proof that Intel's standards for a release are going down, right down to AMD's.

Re: Intel announcing 750MHz, 800MHz PIIIs?

I agree that the timing on this is probably not correct. There is a good chance that corporate and institutional sales are down due to Y2K. Coppermine is scarce in the retail channel, and the OEMs seem to be holding a pretty good inventory of 500 - 600MHZ parts that would be instantly devalued upon such an announcement.

If Intel does announce 750 and 800MHZ parts Monday, it will be more salt in the wounds of their OEMs - unless the OEMs are given large rebates for their unsold inventory and Intel can flood the market with these new parts, which isn't likely given the delivery dates being quoted for 700s and 733s.

In our local (Chicago) Sunday paper, all of the screwdriver shops are offering Athlons up to 700MHZ (but not 750s) while only one shop lists any Intel chip faster than 600MHZ - so I doubt bunches of 800s will be around next week.

One thing might prompt such an announcement. There has been one report of a production Athlon 800 benchmark being published, presumably in violation of NDA. If there are 800s floating around from AMD, and the word seems to be getting out, Intel might feel that they can't afford to lose any more mind-share and so make such an announcement despite the pain it would cause their OEMs, but I doubt it. December 30 at the earliest is my guess, unless Intel is desperate.
