Lizzie, if the church does exert that kind of influence, then it's because the people allow it to happen. So the blame (if it should exist) ultimately lays at the feet of the people who pass such laws.

It's one of the reasons, America is the greatest nation on God's green earth! And why a nation like Ireland lost so many wonderful people through immigration at the beginning of the century.

I don't dispute any of your points. I just thought it was comical to say that priests urge men to beat their wives.

Things are rapidly changing there. It won't be too long before the old mores are seen as standing in the way of a real opportunity.

I have this fantasy of Ireland becoming a tax haven for dotcom companies. If Washington taxes internet sales, all those e-retailers could move to Ireland, where there is an English speaking workforce, and set up shop there. It would be just like Atlas Shrugged!

Even if that doesn't happen, they are in a good position to offer tremendous tax incentives, and their work force is smart, English speaking, and I don't know what wages are commanded there, but I'll bet it's reasonable.

There is a precedent, they already allow writers to live there tax free.

Especially, they blame the mother for letting the
bishop sire children on her.

Lizzie, I was in Dublin last April, and it seems very open and free to me there. While it is true that the Catholic Church still has a lot of influence in more conservative, rural areas, in Dublin the pace of life is very fast, there are single people of all descriptions living everywhere in every configuration imaginable, and there seems to be a pagan revival going on as the Church is rejected for its hypocrisy over all the sexual molestations and the Bishop of Galway's illegitimate child, etc.

Where did you get your information on all this? The high tech industry is in full swing over there, there are so many jobs that Irish young people who have been living in America are moving back, and no one wants jobs in hotels or restaurants so youth from continental Europe are swarming over there. The social climate seems very tolerant, and there are a lot of "out" gays and lesbians as well.
