IMHO,
Somehow Chambers and CSCO make the right moves. For all it's yacked about, Optical still has a ways to go before it really rolls into production in a meaningful way (3-5 years). If SUNW can employ programmers in the CIS, if MSFT can run a technology center in India then I'm certain CSCO can accomplish what it needs to in Italy. After all, this is the internet age.

Optical Design by the Italian core, Integration by CSCO/Italian teams, eventual flexible manufacturing in the US.

Are you ready? Obviously, Forbes isn't.

My business is almost 90% in Italy...........Cisco potentially has no idea what it is getting itself into.

Italy is a strange country and the integration will be one hell of a challenge. The same method of throwing paper money at the staff does not work in Europe like in North America and the Unions are ENTRENCHED by the law -- not just by the strength of the union mgmt.

This is certainly a strange one and may indicate the need for Cisco to do ANY deal that involves Optical Networking companies.

No one has convinced me that Pirelli -- a two bit European player is worth the 2 billion. More importantly, the integration issue will potentially detract Cisco from doing what it really needs to do to compete in the PTT/Carrier market.

I guess we will have to wait for Cisco to make a PR release to find out WHY they bought Pirelli. Certainly can't be for the revenue stream of $200 million!

Perhaps they value the Telco/PTT relationship that Pirelli has in the European market as I have been saying all along? But Pirelli? Hmmmmm.........seems to me a flyer that Cisco is throwing.

Mindmeld and thread,

The Pirelli acquisition apparently put a dent into CIEN's stock price and the rumor had been circulating for several days.

I am curious how this deal would impact JDSU in any way? All comments are welcome.

TIA,
Ibexx
