Newbies, Round Table, Thread ethos

The word "Round Table" is mine. The words "clubby" and "non-member" are yours, bp.

The Round Table is a very loose, fun thing, but does carry with it a sense of shared responsibility, not privilege. It is a sharing of the responsibility of welcoming newbies and helping the thread leader with his/her responsibilities. Thus the leader does not always have to be present nor does the thread leader have to be the bad guy all the time.

(BTW, we don't have a secret handshake.)

Being a regular here also conveys a responsibility when speaking on-topic to be as precise as possible with our language and to improve our understanding of the companies and investment style that we are constantly examining here.

You have taken my statement out of context and changed its meaning. I spoke of those "who are not willing to learn about the subject matter before trying to teach the subject matter will be questioned and sanctioned accordingly." That last little part about trying to teach is very important to my point.

I am pretty sure that my point is pretty important when it comes to the productivity of this thread.

I see that we agree that the regulars on this thread do not have a lock on ggaming. I know of not a single person here who thinks or even acts as though they have such a lock on understanding ggaming.

Informed disagreement is welcomed here. To be informed about our subject requires RTFM, by definition. We do hear out other informed viewpoints, but we do have little tolerance for those who continue an argument when it is clear that they do not understand the language. I am sure that you know that common language is essential to effective communications (by definition, again).

The scenario has been played out a few times. One consistent result of that playout has been to make it clear that at least as many people understand the intent, nature, and atmosphere of this thread in a positive, appreciative way, as those who see it negatively, as, perhaps, you do.

Btw, our sanctions are 1/10 the strength of everyday dialog on most other threads. Its remarkable that people respond to those sanctions as they do. It is equally remarkable that observers such as yourself find our responses so objectionable but never remark about the incredibly bad language and behind the scenes power plays that we see elsewhere.

Anyone who has regularly lurked this thread is aware of a "clubby" atmosphere(thus I lifted your "Round Table" remark) and therefore may "enter" with a certain amount of trepidation or "attitude"

The reason everyone keeps telling us that we are the best thread around is because what you have said above is true, to some degree.

1) Ya gatta pay your dues and RTFM. We are not going to "teach the course" to everyone who shows up here. We had to put out some effort before we started posting here. Let them do the same.

2) The "Clubby" atmosphere promotes civility, one of the most lacking qualities on other threads.

3) There are some posters on SI who do not like some, or all, of us on this thread. They attempt to "Bait" us, or send someone new to "Bait" us. We are aware that this is going on, and we try not to waste much time with such people.

4) We have seen too many threads ruined by new people coming in and taking over to let it happen to us.

5) Yeah, you had better "know your onions" when you show up here. We will treat you with civility, but we do not suffer fools gladly!

6) I have used the "plural" in answering your posts. There are probably some "Knights" on this thread who do not agree with me.

Gosh, that would be a surprise! :0)

bp,

Anyone who has regularly lurked this thread is aware of a "clubby" atmosphere

I'm not sure that all the lurkers want you speaking for them any more than all the pariticpants would want me or anyone speaking for them. As I've often said, I hate generalizations.

Remember that we're not here to serve the lurkers. We welcome them, but there's no question that participants' perspective is inherently different from the lurkers' perspective. We participants welcome the responsibility for the quality of our thread. We embrace the notion of being held accountable. Lurkers, by definition, don't share that with us.

In that context, I think it's unreasonable and maybe unfair to expect participants to pay a lot of attention to lurkers who join the thread only to point out our presumed deficiencies, when they don't join us to participate in the posts that address the core of our thread.

Don't wish to beat a dead horse here...

I hope you can appreciate that I find that a little difficult to believe. On that and other topics, I hope you welcome my disagreement with you as wholeheartedly as I welcome your disagreement with me.
