Thank you, Janet! I've been anxiously waiting for an objective commentary on ELON (I know unclewest is prone to seizures of rapture <gg>). I've read it once, and am printing it out so I can study it in more detail. I was very impressed with your grasp of Gorilla gaming, and in particular, the way you incorporated a definition of Chasm Crossing into your analysis.

Great job! I thought you said you were new at this stuff?

Janet - Thank you - very informative.

disclosure : i am long ELON as of a month or so ago. that was based on "gut feel" and my unstructured DD. janets structure DD document, to a large extent will help me sleep better :-)

cheers, kumar
PS: Are we looking at the next csco/intc ?

ELON competition & Janet.

Thanks for a great report. I was about to write a lengthly opinion on Elon's competition and was going to use the quote of
"What does this technology encompass"
as a basis. Your inclusion of this saved me a lot of work, and spared the thread from my rambling.

Once again I think it is important to define the terms of the question in evaluating who their competition is. I think it is critical to not be comparing apples and oranges. We must surely be looking for something that poses a substantial threat to what they are doing.

They may have competition for some of their products on an individual basis, or for a subset of their business, and may encounter resistance to what they are trying to achieve, but in terms of the technology offered, from what I understand they are the only company capable of currently providing, off the shelf, an end to end, peer to peer, open, interoperable platform that can be used worldwide across many markets for controlling everyday devices.

AT&T chose LonWorks technology for the implementation of their most critical business function -- the switching network offices.
Of this application, Michael J. Wheeler (Technical Manager, Office Infrastructure Development) said, "... no other viable option open to AT&T... would have provided the efficiency or performance we found in your technology. Moreover, the overall system reliability is everything Echelon promised, and more."

The above quotes come from a great, albeit slightly dated FAQ located at surfnetworks.com

Also, their iLon server began shipping this quarter. How that will impact revenue will be telling, since they state in their 10Q that ?the company recognizes revenue from product at the time of shipment to the customers.? 100%+year-over-year revenue growth is quite likely.

Very much in agreement here, the projected growth in EPS is staggering.

Janet,

Brilliant! A big New York City pat on the back!

*restraightens lapels*

Okay, thread-holders, what does it take to get ELON on the Watch and Wait list..

Oh and whateverhappened to the UncleFrank opening post with links to the ports? It doesnt show up for me no-more...anyone?

Again, Janet, as you know, I'm right there with you on ELON. It'll be hard to keep up with this one. I'm thinking of doubling up Monday!

Proudly,

GaryX

hi janet,
fine piece of work...thanks.
per your pm...i would make 2 comments.

a coupla weeks ago, toshiba extended the agreement to produce neuron chips for 10 more years.

second. i consider the csco certification of the i-LON server and csco statements that elon's server has withstood rigorous worldwide testing and is ready for deployment, to be enormous. kind of like a final blessing by the Godfather.
thanks again,
unclewest

Great presentation!

I am long ELON also. It is one of those stocks one should buy and come back in a couple of years to find a pleasant surprise.

I am a big believer in home automation (eventually). We always thought one computer per family is enough. But I have seen a great many people have one computer per family member, so everyone can get on the net at the same time. New homes are being built with network cables running along side of phone wires. The day will come when it is easier to open the garage door with a click of the mouse than walking downstairs. The availability of something will create its own demand. I say smart homes will be here in less than five years. If ELON has the only protocol in town that will make it happen, then they definitely have Gorilla potential.

I shared a TV in college with my roommate. Now I have at least three in my house, getting ready to buy another one for my bedroom. And I only watch about one hour a day!

Janet,

Thank you for your fine report on ELON. I just wanted to make one comment now and I will have more later. If selling of the Echelon ILON server is to be a significant portion of ELON's future revenues, then I think your report should include WIND as a significant supplier to ELON. Once again, as both UW and I have noted, the Real Time Operating System in the ELON servers is a WIND RTOS.

Thanks again for your report.

Best Regards,

Huey

P.S. WIND just bought another company today; this one a Canadian maker of embedded Java based tools and other components for building flexible, multi-application consumer devices. I would include the link, but WIND faxed it to me. It is probably up at the WIND web site though.

RE: ELON hunt project.
Janet, that was probably the most "clarifying" piece regarding ELON that I have seen anywhere. Thanks for your excellent research, excellent writing, and gorilla discipline. Bravo!

Janet, that's a super report on ELON, and I see that I'm not the first to offer congratulations...but perhaps the best recognition is Justin's decision to place it into the W&W list.

I do have some questions...1)you mention building automation as the bowling pin at present, home networks coming to the chasm slowly...what other market opportunities is the company looking at as the next, perhaps quicker, opportunity...2) can you give us any published revenue forecasts...and 3) what significance is to be attached to the expiration of the Motorola part of their manufacturing/distribution chain?

First, Janet, I have to congratulate and thank you for your phenomenal analysis of ELON. I am indebted to the contributors on this list who share such intelligent and thoughtful commentary, and as soon as I feel ready to actually contribute anything approaching the quality of what I've read, I hope to be able to give back as much as I have received from posters like you, UF, Mike B, BruceB, Dr. Id, DownSouth, LindyBill, Snasraway, 100cfm, Unclewest, Voop, and so many more. It was a great treat to see photos from San Diego, and be able to match faces to names I've come to know over these past six months. A huge thank you to Dr. Id for introducing me to G&K!!

Just downloaded Yahoo's new Finance Vision. (It needs cable modem or dsl to really benefit from the video.) Under the "Hot Companies" button is an excellent video on Echelon. Lots of shots of the company itself, nodes, interviews with staff...

ELON:

Janet, I'm probably the last of the Mohicans to read your Hunt field report on ELON, the gorilla candidate. I hope you'll accept my humble gratitude for the time you put in trying to help the rest of us neophytes make sense of this animal. I thought it was a great report, and further elevates the standards of the contributions being made by youngbloods such as yourself.

I'll be repeating the Portfolio Survey in a month or so, and it will be interesting how your high quality report has influenced threadsters here to wade in on ELON.

I'd like to publicly thank Sir Thucydides for championing the HUNT effort, and providing direction.

Now maybe you all can help me out with a certain problem I have, ie...... I don't have enough money for all of these hyperattractive gorilla candidates and Kings! We've added a lot of companies to the discussion, compared to about 6 months ago. That's good; not complaining.

But I wonder if, once we have completed the Project HUNT list, it would be useful to try to rank order the list in some way, such as growth potential. I suppose the next Thread Portfolio Survey may point us in that direction, since people vote with their feet; but I think whatever the Survey results, there will be a lag between what people think and where their money presently is located.

Maybe UnQ or some others can speak to the idea of trying to rank order all of these companies that are being evaluated, and listed on the W & W list.

ELON competition

Do either of these initiatives represent significant competition to ELON? Disclaimer- I am following the ELON discussion but do not have a position.

Factory automation prepares for Ethernet era

By Charles J. Murray
EE Times
(03/16/00, 5:55 p.m. EST)

CHICAGO ? Two major automation vendors headed down separate paths to connectivity with the
ubiquitous Ethernet at the National Industrial Automation Show this week.

Backed by Rockwell Automation, the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA) announced support
for EtherNet/IP, an open application layer that would allow devices such as motors, drives and sensors
to plug into an Ethernet network.

At the same time, engineers from Siemens Energy & Automation Inc. (Norcross, Ga.) said they plan
within the next two months to introduce a control device that would act as a link, or gateway, between
industrial buses like DeviceNet or Profibus, and Ethernet.

That measure, they said, would be temporary, lasting only a few years, until the industrial world settles
on a broadly accepted communication standard to lay atop Ethernet TCP/IP. Siemens, which developed
the Profibus network that competes directly with DeviceNet, is not expected to support EtherNet/IP.

After years of waiting for a winner to emerge in the industrial bus wars, users of factory automation
equipment now face the next vexing question: how to bring Ethernet to the factory floor. Broad
acceptance of a standard like EtherNet/IP would be a huge step forward in the battle to tie industrial
automation gear to both the front office and the Internet.

Janet, Nice report. The reason I first bought ELON, (I'm flat now of course) was the CSCO blessing and home automation. Being the tech head that I am, I found buried in my files a brochure dated 1995 from Hybrid Technical Systems that uses X-10. X-10 is a protocol has been around a long time, so home automation has been too. After further review of ELON and prospects for home automation I came to the conclusion that we are still a few years away from ELON and Lonworks to working it's way into out daily lives. As we see from the market reaction and drop in ELON, the market has totally used up the good will from the CSCO announcement, and the reality of no big revenues from home automation this year or next has hit home. So I'm going to wait and watch while ELON enters the tornado in home automation.

Thanks again for the report.

My wife and I belong to the Yahoo ELON club, you might find this interesting,

from an email:

Q1 Chat with Echelon Executive Management
Issued:

04/06/00

It's been a busy day. Here is some good news. I just received confirmation from Echelon's Executive Management of their willingness to chat with the investors out here in cyberspace.

Time: April 20th, 2000, 5:00 West Coast time (1 hour)

Chat with: Bea Yormark & Chris Stanfield

As in the past we'll use the chat feature of the club area. Please log in and experiment with this section before the day of the chat.

clubs.yahoo.com

We would like to gather a set of questions to ask during the first half of the chat. Please post your questions to the club area. The first half is structured time when the moderator asks questions. The second half is typically open to the chaos of random questions. This has worked well in the past, as everyone has been courteous enough to allow the dialog to be metered.

For those unable to join the chat, we plan to publish a summary to the club area. There will also be a conference call at 2:00 on the same day. Refer to Echelon's IR page for details. Also keep an eye on the home page for updates regarding the plug-in needed for the live webcast being considered.
