Just playing devil's advocate here - is that really a tornado? Or were the numbers so low that it seems like the start of a little twister (because if it is a tornado, it is still very small)?

>> Electronic Program Guides in TORNADO!

Fantastic, Merlin! I'm going to put this post in the G&K archives, right next to #833. For newcomers who haven't read it, that post was made on 3/25/99 and Merlin pointed his magical finger at QUALCOMM.

For those who understand the significance of the adoption rate growth but are less than impressed with the absolute value of the numbers, keep in mind this evidence is based on one member of Gemstar's value chain. We can expect similar stories from the others.

Hi guys....just starting to redo some old research into Gemstar. A couple of questions....

1) Does anyone know the total number of IPG's deployed so far?

2) Why is the advertising revenue number so low? I assume that their are at least a couple of million IPG's in the market....but advertising revenue was still only $800,000 (though ramping fast).

3) Is there anything special about Thompson that may have accelerated their adoption rate ahead of other Gemstar licensees?

TIA....

Hope I'm not spoiling the party, but was the statement saying they have sold 2 million EPGs this quarter or was it saying the total EPGs sold by the company have reached a cumulative total of 2 million during the quarter?

Very different statements, but I'm leaning toward the second version. Especially when they sold only 1.4 million set-top boxes. Nonetheless, if it is the latter, then would an increase of 500,000 EPGs sold in this quarter still constitute a tornado?

What's the verdict?

Later

Edi:: Sorry for the duplication in posts as I see another person has come to the same conclusion.

Mike, glad I found your "EPGs in TORNADO!" post in my effort to catch up.

Has anyone decided to do a "Lindy" on GMST?
