I haven't used a grocery cart in years. Since I do little
cooking, I'm able to use a hand-carried shopping basket,
a wonderful invention. I'm able to slither quickly thru
the tightest cart blockades, sometimes having to lift the
basket above the traffic jammers like an Olympic torch.

Now if the grocers would come up with a checkout line
that says 10 Items Or Less (Violators will be shot),
No Coupons, Green Cash Only, No Price Quibbling
Under A Dime and No Shouting Into A Cell Phone
,
grocery shopping could become a breeze.

Actually, I stop at the grocery store nearly every day,
where I pick up the newspaper and whatever else I think
I need that day. I've never been a grocery planner who
makes only one trip to the store every week or so. It's
genetic -- my mother was, and probably still is, a non-
planning frequent shopper. Same for my dad, who does
a lot of the cooking and makes separate trips to the
store. Anyway, the Frequent Shopper Gene has contributed
to allowing me to avoid the horror of grocery carts.

(Penni, America desperately needs a column from you on
supermarket etiquette. A book, even??)

<<I managed to refrain from
using expletives and otherwise comparing her to barnyard animals, but everyone else within
earshot was wincing and wide-eyed.>>

I would be extremely interesting in hearing what you said! And since you said it w/o expletives... well, won't you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to reproduce it? We won't have any way of knowing whether it's entirely accurate, so if you can't recall perfectly, well you could just try to recapture the moment and give her another piece of your mind!

I have a feeling she was, like, rilly surprised, even if she didn't let on.

Jeez. I agree with E, JF. We need to hear somewhat like what you said. I find it extremely pleasing. And maybe can even steal some for the Useful toolbox.

There's another aspect to hearing your story ~ I realize I haven't had anything like that happen to me for a long time.

Cows Holy. (Bring the Wood Knockers please.)

"MAN CUTS, GUTS, AND DRESSES HOG IN LOT."

Yah. I don't see how you can even speak without the expletives in there. "You STUPID BITCH" has got to be hammered in there right at the start.
