Got where it would only run from never to an hour or so.

Assuming your RAM is up to the task (300A at 450 is at 100MHz FSB so PC100 is recommended), here are my next-best guesses.

I would suspect a heat-related problem based on your above statement. Make sure the CPU fan is working, and that dust hasn't accumulated in the heat sink? Also if you haven't tried them yet I would recommend a CPU cooling program such as CpuIdle, cpuidle.de Personally I use CpuIdle but there are other similar programs also available(Waterfall or Rain?).

Another random guess, maybe the power supply is starting to fail?

Me too: >>last several days blue screens, freeze ups and spontaneous reboots.<<

I have been experiencing same problems since Thursday. Its behavior and failure mode is unpredictable. It seems to involve a sudden significant reduction in my system's ability to run multiple tasks over a period of time. It only happens when I have MSIE open with certain other apps or only with certain web sites.

A new clue appeared tonight with this blue screen:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Windows

Terminating thread due to a stack overflow problem. A VxD, possibly recently installed, has consumed too much stack space. Increase the setting of 'MinSPs' in SYSTEM.INI or remove recently installed VxD's. There are currently 6 SPs allocated.

I do not know what this means. I looked at System.ini and did not see a variable directly related to this message.

I think it may be related to the new Microsoft IE5.01 SP
patch which I installed at that time.

Security Update, July 19, 2000
This update resolves the "Persistent Mail Browser Link," "Cache Bypass," and "Malformed E-mail Header" security vulnerabilities in Outlook Express. Download now to prevent a malicious user from reading e-mails and files on your computer, or using your computer to send damaging e-mails to others. These vulnerabilities do not give a malicious user the ability to add, change, or delete files on your computer.

The only other system change made the day before was a weekly Symantec Norton Anti-Virus NAV update. The NAV may contribute to my inability to to do a warm boot recovery but I do not think it is causing the crash.

I suspect another possible contributor in my case could be my use of ZoneAlarm firewall which might interfere with what I suspect was a quick and dirty MS patch. Just a WAG on my part.

I see MS has since released a new patch for the Email security issue which does not affect the IE. More fuel for my speculation as to why. I am shooting from the hip here.

It may involve the old Windows 95/98 resource memory being over taxed by the new patch.

Anyone familiar with this knows error messages can be missleading as a result of running out of space to complete the normal start-up sequence of loading drivers.

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

<<<OK Gang- Here is my question. The machine is a celeron 300a overclocked to 450, 128 ram, Matrox? card 8mg, WIN98SE, BH6 motherboard. Been having for the last several days blue screens, freeze ups and spontaneous reboots. >>>

I was talking to a bunch of tech folks in a computer research operation the other day. I brought up the subject of overclocking and several of the engineers said I would be trading speed for endurance, and possibly proper operation. They implied the chips were constructed with materials that break down over time as electric signals travel along them, and overclocking hastens their demise. Overclocking can also produce unwanted electronic distortions that compromise the accuracy of the chip.

The engineers preferred to use multiple processors run at normal speeds to get the same results as overclocking. They said it was more expensive, but not subject to the above problems.

They also said that running multi-monitor situations with 10+ windows open with market depth a real time graphs as many traders do really runs a processor hard. That is exactly the kind of environment that the above mentioned distortions could case problems in, feeding back and causing problems throughout the computer system.

I have no understanding of this stuff, so I leave it as an open question to the thread. Any comments pro or con?
