Yeah, Apollo you are a good case in point. Only DSL would cause you to leave AOL.

As for a portal, why would you need one? This is an important distinction. When I surf and get my email I do it raw and have no problem doing it. I PREFER using search engines to find autonomous sites for information. I have three email accounts including a Hotmail account. I use Macster, Napster and Hotline. I have a freeware FTP clients on both my Macs and both my PCs and have no problem using them.

All of this blinds me to how non tech users use the internet.

Since you started with a company like AOL, I think you probably feel kind of naked without the portal thing. Can you explain more fully why you need a portal?

DSL will probably hurt AOL, on the other hand they are still getting "late starting technophobes" to try their service and therefor get hooked on it.

<<Any Portal recommendations?>>

I would ask why do you need a portal? For email? I don't travel much, or I should say I don't need email when I travel, so I just use the email service provided as part of my ISP service and access it with the email button on the Netscape Communicator screen. If you need access on the road my brother has EarthLink, is satisfied with them and they have access (as does AOL, ATT and others) by local calls in many cities around the country but I know nothing of them myself.

When I launch Netscape Communicator the default homepage is SI (guess where I spend most of my online time) and I keep a list of search engines/portals in my Bookmarks. I guess I am a Portal agnostic which is why I never saw value in AOL.

I gave up my Compuserve membership before I got DSL service two years ago. Going through Compuserve just slowed web browsing (then at 28.8 kbps) down even more. Installing DSL with my G3 Mac was almost plug-and-play (no cards just cables) with a fifteen minute call to the ISP to walk me through the software configuration. I think you will agree when I say that I will never go back to a modem.

Apollo, why do you need a "portal"? What does a portal do for you?

You have a browser. You have access to search engines. You have some sort of e-mail program (Outlook, I hope, but not "express"), you have an e-mail address. You have an online broker.

And don't forget all that Spam you get that takes you on a great adventure.

>> Is there anybody out there who loves their portal, besides AOL? Any Portal recommendations?

I confess; I love my portal <gg>.

I was an early AOL user, and it was a great introduction to online services, but it had a horrible internet interface. After 12 months, I took the big step of dropping AOL and signing up with an isp, but I missed the rich content that AOL provided. Until I found Yahoo. To this day, they remain my home page, and I use them for email, portfolios, news, tv listings, and a hundred other things that I don't even think about.

uf

Just my 2 cents:
I started with AOL-Busy signals all the time.
Moved to MSN-Liked it ok but very slow. Probably server problems.
Moved to a local ISP-Always could get on but only at about 26K.

About 2 weeks ago was able to get on Sprint fixed Wireless. I love it. Installed in about 3h. Internet always on. Down-Link at about 1Mbps. Up-Link at 250 K. Things really pop up. $40/mo. No phone line needed. Did not cut out during a rain storm, although my Direct TV did.

It has been available here in Tucson, AZ for about 2 mo.
The installers said they had put in about 2000 installations.

It has not been advertised as they have all they can do just with word of mouth.

I also do not use a portal. I set up shortcuts on my screen such as S.I. and if I need a portal I usually use Yahoo or Go2Net.

I cannot get DSL or Cable Internet service here but am happy with Fixed Wireless. Sprint is ready to offer it in Detroit.
Cheers,
Everett

anybody out there who loves their portal, besides AOL? Any Portal recommendations?

Like UF, I am a Yahoo portal addict (my.yahoo.com). I've tried using other portals (Excite, Lycos, Snap, Netscape, etc.), but I haven't been satisfied with any of them like I have with Yahoo. And as a bonus, you get all the new Yahoo services that they offer (IE, being able to see credit card, brokerage account, bank account balances). I've been a happy Yahoo customer since '96!
