Re: Digital TV - Replay TV throwing in the towel?

Thread- We had a discussion upstream about PVR players. Apparently there is going to be one less. -MikeM(From Florida)

ReplayTV exits the PVR business

Broadcom is buying in [reference to Broadcom buying VisionTech] while ReplayTV gets out. The digital video recorder manufacturer has instead decided to license its technology to cable providers and other TV related companies. Those companies can then use the technology to offer digital video recording and VOD services.

ReplayTV said it is facing intense competition from other PVR makers, like TiVo and Microsoft’s Ultimate TV.

The company has also moved to cut approximately half its staff of 260 employees.

Re: Digital TV - DVD Player Stats

Thread- Here are some DVD player stats. IMHO they are important because IMHO I think they will eventually take away from PVR sales. IMO you can only spend so much money and time to hook up so many thingys to a TV. A DVD and VCR hooked up to a TV today may take a serious bite out of potential PVR sales. Who wants to hook up VCR, DVD, and PVR? Not counting those who even hook up surround sound stereo.

I understand they are not apples to apples. But when/if DVD does turn into a recordable device, my feeling is they will hurt PVR sales. IMHO, I kind of feel PVR belongs in the cableco headend and it'll be too confusing for the average household to mess with. This is all simply a guess on my part. Here are the DVD stats. They are quite impressive.

PS My reference title is a little misleading. I just use the 'Digital TV' title as a catch all for all new technologies going after the 1,000,000,000 worldwide TV households marketplace. DVD, although a digital technology, has nothing to do with the actual TV set being a digital one. I keep meaning to post the digital TV(true digital set) stats, but I don't understand why they would be significant driver of digital cable quite yet.

Thread- Well sure seems like a lot of posters on this thread like the odds of the PVR being successful. If the stats start to show this, I can change my mind. But so far they have not. If it's going to be such a large market, why did Replay give virtually give up on it?

If anyone has any updated stats, please post.

PVR success and MSO network upgrades are most likely diametrically opposed. That's why I follow it as close as I do. -MikeM(From Florida)
