I've had many, many cats during my life, and only had one that was as sentient as that. Max (short for Maximus - he was built like a watermelon) used to get my husband up by popping his claws on the cloth grille of my husband's beloved speakers. He'd do it carefully, too, pop one claw, and wait for a reaction, then pop another claw, and wait for a reaction. It always worked, eventually. One night after a party, when we'd stayed up very late and were hung over, Max fished a beer can out of the trash, and wapped it so that it spun sideways on the linoleum floor from one side of the room to the other, making a loud racket, then stood there and waited to see what we would do. When we groaned, pulled pillows over our heads and burrowed down deeper into the bed, he walked over to the other side of the room, and wapped the beer can so that it spun across the floor again, making a loud racket. It was clear that he wasn't playing with the beer can for fun, he was deliberately making as much noise as he could to get our attention. I call cats that have developed that level of consciousness "celestial cats." I've had two celestial cats, both brown tabbies.

crow, CB and PMSW....what a nice thing to be able to stop by for a bit tonight and hear echos of your words this AM....Seattle was lovely today, wasn't it crow? CB, loved to hear about your tabbies....brought back memories of living with them before hubby (who is highly allergic to them)...cats are great fun! And P~ your story had me laughing so hard 'bout fell off the chair here....my Dad was like that too....Never was sure if it taught me to think ahead, or to never finish the project....sometimes both are apt... CB...what's the special tonight....I don't feel like cooking tonight...
