Alibek Warns of Worldwide Smallpox Catastrophe

John O. Edwards
Friday, Sept. 27, 2002

One of the world’s leading authorities on biological weapons, the former head of Soviet biowarfare, warns that a smallpox release by Iraq could cause a worldwide calamity of biblical proportions.
In an exclusive interview with NewsMax’s Carl Limbacher, as part of NewsMax’s Off the Record Club (click here for more details), Dr. Ken Alibek said he had little doubt that Iraq has smallpox.

And Dr. Alibek said he had no doubt Saddam would unleash the lethal virus upon his enemies, including the United States, if he believes his regime will fall.

Alibek says that the development of such bioweapons as smallpox is not complicated and "doesn’t require much equipment or sophisticated knowledge with sophisticated deployment techniques for deploying.”

Alibek also reveals in "Off the Record” that Saddam’s work on camel pox, a sister virus to smallpox, is a very clear indication to him that Saddam likely has smallpox.

"Camel pox is a virus which is very close to a smallpox virus,” Alibek explained.

"It’s very hard to believe that Saddam Hussein was interested in camel pox virus just because he wanted to protect his camels from this pox viral infection.”

Alibek insists Saddam's scientists have used camel pox for modeling work for the smallpox virus.

Alibek said: "If you do such work, you can get some knowledge how to grow this virus, how to concentrate it, how to dry this virus, if it’s necessary, and in this case, if you do such work and use camel pox as a modeling virus, it would be possible, after you finish this work, to know what can be done with smallpox virus.” (Find out more about this tape from "Off the Record with Dr. Ken Alibek” – CLICK HERE NOW.)

Smallpox: A Worldwide Calamity

If it turns out that Saddam’s scientists do indeed have smallpox, Alibek is certain the Iraqi dictator will use it.

"If he sees some threat to himself personally, in my opinion, nothing’s going to stop him from using smallpox ...” Alibek affirmed.

"If Saddam Hussein uses smallpox virus, of course it’s going to be a big problem in the United States, and it would be a big problem from many standpoints.”

He suggests a smallpox attack will make the anthrax attacks of last year seem like a trifle.

'We're Going to Suffer'

"We’re going to suffer very, very hard,” he said.

Alibek says the outbreak of the highly contagious smallpox virus will create a worldwide calamity of death and destruction – as well as economic catastrophe.

He offered his prediction: "I don’t believe it’s going to be a situation where, for example, the entire population of Earth would die, but what we’re going to have, specifically, that the number of people who are going to suffer, the number of people who are going to die ... unfortunately, will be very, very big.”

In his exclusive interview with NewsMax, Alibek suggested smallpox inoculations should begin before an outbreak. (You can get this new tape by Clicking Here.)

He fears, though, that a vaccine may not fully protective. Hussein, he said, may have variants of the smallpox virus, including the more lethal "blackpox.”

Dr. Alibek reveals much more about smallpox, blackpox, anthrax and other biowepaons in the new tape "Off the Record with Dr. Ken Alibek.”

Solutions

On the tape he also gives advice for Americans to follow if an outbreak does take place.

In this exclusive tape: Dr. Alibek gives his candid views on much, much more, including additional biothreats, on who caused the anthrax attacks of last year, and some surprising views on the West Nile virus.

About Dr. Alibek

Dr. Alibek is arguably the world’s foremost expert on bioweapons. He once headed the old Soviet Union’s bioweapons program.

As first deputy chief of the civilian branch of the Soviet Union’s offensive biological weapons program, Dr. Alibek spent two decades preparing for a war with the United States that never happened.

He is a former Soviet army colonel who defected to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1992 and subsequently served as a consultant to numerous U.S. government agencies on industrial technology, medical microbiology, biological weapons defense and biological weapons non-proliferation.

He has worked with the National Institutes of Health, testified extensively before the U.S. Congress on proliferation of biological weapons, and he is the author of "Biohazard," published by Random House.

Dr. Alibek is executive director for George Mason University’s Center for Bio-Defense and is a distinguished professor at George Mason University.
