If you think the United States of America "cowers", you are the one mistaken.

"Regaining respect is very much in the US' interests "

An illegal war will not gain us any respect.

"Saddam Hussein is one of those who has been proclaiming himself victor over us" Yeah, so. We're going to jeopardize our country and way of life because Saddam is a megalomaniac?

The Arab Mind, eh, Nadine? Some might think that moving beyond politically convenient stereotypes would serve our interests better, but that would be wrong, I imagine.

Hi Nadine Carroll; Re: "The Arabs despise weakness. They know what to think about a great nation that does nothing when smaller nations and even gangs of terrorists declare war on it, attack its forces, proclaim it the Great Satan and themselves the victors of Allah. ... Removing [Saddam] is step two in regaining respect in the Gulf (removing the Taliban was step one)."

Yes, I've found that the only way I can keep my lady in line is by getting physical with her when she gets mouthy.

On the other hand, Israel's bitch slapping the Palestinians for decades has only caused the Palestinians to develop suicide bombers.

P.S. Or maybe all this talk about respect is just trailer park mentality.

Hi Nadine Carroll; A year ago you wrote:

They think, that great nation may be strong but it has no balls. So they give it no respect, and increase their payoffs to the Islamists. Saddam Hussein is one of those who has been proclaiming himself victor over us. Removing him is step two in regaining respect in the Gulf (removing the Taliban was step one). Regaining respect is very much in the US' interests. Arab nations that have a healty respect for the US will be much less likely to solve their internal problems by paying off their local Islamists and pointing them at the US and Israel. That has been a cost-free option for the dictatorships of the Arab world for too long now. #reply-18089547

If you check the chronology, Carl, you will notice that development of the suicide bombers followed hard on the heels of the serious peace talks with a career terrorist. #reply-18089688

Ariel Sharon took power on February 6, 2001. He's had nearly two years to bitch slap the Palestinians back into "respect" mode, but still he has to have troops all over the occupied territories (and he's still losing armored vehicles). The terror continues, essentially unabated from when he took power, though it has had its ups and downs. The Israeli public is not infinitely patient, and eventually they will get tired of this, and they will elect a peace candidate, just like they always have in the past. For that matter, eventually the Palestinians will get tired of this and they will move towards negotiations.
...
Your explanation implies that Israel's foreign policy has been largely determined by effete or moronic politicians. My explanation is that you reap what you sow, and the Israelis have sown hate.

Another year has gone by. We went and removed Saddam. We still get no "respect" from the Arabs. Very little has changed, as far as terrorism goes, except that now more and more Americans are killed by terrorists in Iraq. Israel's terror problem continues. And, as I predicted, the Israeli public is starting to think about peace despite the failure of the Palestinians to stop the terror.

I'd like to know when we start getting some Arab "respect" by this wonderful foreign policy that the Israelis invented. I say never. You say when? I say the American public, like the Israeli public, gets tired of the pointless violence and pulls our troops out. You say never?
