Yes , but not to digress too much the Gospels are one thing , and claiming direct lineage to God is another .
This fiction of the descendants of Abraham , and the other fallacies of the "Chosen Ones", has wrought much mischief in the world , to say the least .<G>

Christianity and Islam's fundamentalism fail miserably in this universal exclusion/inclusion of all men in God's creation under the pretense & promise of their own poetic versions of eternal Salvation. Not to mention endless war and rivalry which is the attempt here ? And the resisistance to reason under superstitious law.

Each thinks it owns the lock and keys ....

I think Heinlein meant there should be a more direct manifestation of God than simply the words of prophets. The accounts of the Apostles have been translated and lost true meaning plus they conflict one with each other. I think the Christ story is a damn good one from many angles but I would not put too much faith in it.

It may be that you misunderstand the meaning of faith. Faith is simply trusting a person's words and deeds

Is it, then, synonymous to "naivete"?

Reading the Gospels carefully, with an honest and open heart and mind, will reveal that these men were sober and serious minded men who were writing historical realities and not invented myths

I have always wondered why these "accounts" were not written within Jesus' lifetime? Why, exactly, did they wait 30-40 years for memory to fade, to put those "historical realities" to paper?

When an individual approaches these eyewitness historical New Testament documents with an open heart and mind, the historical reality is merged with the spiritual reality and faith (trust) is born in the heart.

With all due respect, I do not understand how and why a person can be asked to "approach" a book in a different state of heart and mind than with any other.

Why is this suspension of disbelief ("open heart & mind") necessary?
