HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RAMBI!!

In honor of your natal day, I have even gone to the extra effort of HTMLing, something I do not ordinarily do.

Wow, nine birthdays on SI. Me too, very soon. Too soon!

I enjoy reading your reminiscences of your past birthdays.

Did you search out the wild and zany, virtual parties we threw for you on SI? I can't remember if it was for your birthday or whether it was just a garden-variety goofy party, but whatever, I'm sure you remember the wake. I think it was because you went away on a vacation. Anyway, you were uncustomarily away from SI, and we held the wake. We were all so devlish back then. - Holly

What good is 57

"57" is a good thing if you're a Heinz or related to one, or if you're eating French fries.

Happy birthday, again. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I occasionally will go back to the '97-'98 days of DAR and scan a stretch of posts. Great fun back when it was all new and creative. Glad it's still here in its scaled-down form.

Happy Birthday, Rambi!

You share a birthday with my father, who turns 80 today.

I called him yesterday, told him he still had a little more mileage on him as the old folks in my family generally live really long lives. Many live well in their 90s.

My grandaunt, who died at 90-something, was a champion bridge player, swam a mile a day until she got pancreatic cancer, and is famous for going to China, then throwing a full dinner party, most of which she cooked, on the day she returned. What's a little jet lag to an otherwise vigorous 85 year old?.

They made 'em tough in West Texas in the old days.

She remembered riding a wagon to her school in Austin, St. Something-or-other, with armed men who were literally riding shotgun to protect her from various nefarious types still left over from the Wild West.

Your memories as a vigorous 85 year old will of course be different but they'll be just as amazing to your grandchildren and great grandchildren as my grandaunt's were to me. The problem, of course, is that everything we do now seems so ordinary.

But it isn't, trust me.

You might be the mother of the next Marlon Brando.

Or a discovery of some publishing house that will issue all of your scribbling, electronic and otherwise, to a tremendous public reception.

Who knows.

Interestingly, my son had a dream, too, as you did in 2/98. He told it to me about it yesterday. It involved my father, who in his dream turned into a scary zombie named Butch.

I did not tell my father about this particular dream on his birthday.

57, eh?

That's when you look in the mirror and notice how everything is starting to sag a little. But the good news you probably have some things that aren't getting lower and are probably even higher than when you were 21.

Birthdays

None are meaningless as long as you stay alive and can eat peaches
and chocolate
and blueberries
and cherries
and tapioca pudding
and whip cream
and butter
and fresh salads
and you can smell lavender, and lemongrass, and baking bread and wet pavement
and see sunsets, and blue skies, and birds, and the faces of your children
and hear them tell you they love you
:-)

I remember 2. I swear I do. I got a teeny grand piano.

You and Schroeder. Your passions both warped -- oops, strike that, make it beautifully formed -- in early childhood.

Happy Birthday yesterday Rambi! Sorry I missed it...loved your notes on past birthdays! Didn't know the advanced search could find info that far back.... What did you have to insert to find them?

Do you ever think....today is (in your case, the 2nd day of your 58th winter)....It's always such a good feeling to think like that for me...a good clean sheet of adventure, and what I will make it for the day.

Good Wishes to You for every day in this, your New Year....
