re: Its exactly what free speech is all about. If we try to shut him up, we are only hurting ourselves.

I wonder if "nuking Mecca" would be considered "hate speech"? My guess is it would to the Muslim world.

Let's throw MM in jail for "hate speech".

But I guess "hate speech" is in the eye of the beholder.

tejek, you are missing the whole point of freedom. Absolute freedom is not a God given right and absolute freedom is not a legistlated right in our country either. Your freedoms should exist only insofar as it doesn't impinge on the freedoms of others. The minute your actions start to harm others, that is when your actions pass from the realm of freedom and into the realm of antisocial behavior. Freedoms exist to help a society grow, as well as the invidivuals within them. Freedoms DO NOT exist to tear a society apart and allow an individual to destroy their own health, spiritual or otherwise.

Therefore, limiting free speech by banning hate speech intended to incite violence is completely within the intent of our constitution, and within the moral bounds of any liberal society.

tejek,

re:
I no more like seeing the Aryan Nation march in Cour d' Alene than seeing a shark when swimming in the ocean, but I will be the first to defend the Aryan Nation's right to march even though violence usually ensues. Better to keep them in the light where we can all see them, then force them to go underground.

I know what you're trying to say and I agree - I don't mean to suggest we start banning the KKK or others who's messages we don't like. It's a slippery slope for sure to start banning speech of any kind.

I guess I would try to clarify hate speech (in this context) to mean inciting or promoting violence. I'll use the - yelling fire in a theatre example - it's illegal for endangerment reasons not only to those in the room - but others who may die in a fire while the fire dept. wastes time chasing a false alarm.

Also, the punishment in the this case would be revocation of status in the USA - which of course only works until they are citizens (like London). Damn I feel I'm painting myself into a corner. :-)

Can we at least spy on the guy and bug his phones?
