I didn't think the US was to blame. I believe I said they were lamentably ignorant about Shiite plans. I'm sure you know how annoying it is to be told you said something you did not say, if you could possibly refrain from doing that, I'd appreciate it. There is enough to argue about without having to correct a record that is right here, and which you could check. It would make everything more meaningful (at least to me) if we were talking actual issues, rather than correcting errors in the sequence of posts. I realize some people make such statements just to provoke others, but I don't think this is the case with you. I know your time is limited, you're a busy person, but if you could please check what I actually said, and respond to that, I would be deeply grateful.

Edit- apparently I said "stupid"- I am still quite pleased with that assessment:

I also said the circumstances were important. I continue to think that.

Charles Krauthammer is a neocon nitwit. Nothing more. He's another one responsible for the hell-on-earth that Bush and the Republicans made out of Iraq.

For the US, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of ruined lives and $400 BILLION in taxpayer funds, to be able to make Iraq WORSE than it was under Saddam is a fate worth rotting in hell for all eternity. It's a situation beyond all imagining.

Saddam, creature of the US, was horrible. What has happened since in Iraq is beyond words.

>>>>no longer believe that the US was to blame for the execution

Huh???? You can't be so stupid to believe that? The US was 100% responsible for the execution. Hell! They had him in custody all that time and they just handed him to some blood thirsty hooded thugs not unlike Al-Qaida (in fact they could have been Al-Qaida especially the way they were "dressed"). The only other time we saw such an execution such as this was when Al-Qaida was executing American hostages. So don't be stupid. This was a 100% U.S. responsibility and as everything else that Bush incompetent POS has done before, he screwed it up.

I don't believe in the death penalty except when it is necessary in order to prevent more murders. This was.

Huh? What was the murder rate in Iraq under Saddam prior to our ousting him compared to the murder rate since?

Krauthammers article was excellent. Thanks for posting it. The last paragraph in particular is one that hopefully, everyone in "control" will repeat more than once to the Iraqi's.

We should not be surging American troops in defense of such a government. This governing coalition -- Maliki's Dawa, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim's Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq and Sadr's Mahdi Army -- seems intent on crushing the Sunnis at all costs. Maliki should be made to know that if he insists on having this sectarian war, he can well have it without us.

The New Zealand view of Saddam Hussein's hanging: stuff.co.nz

Actually, it's just Raybon Kan's opinion, but he is enormously popular in NZ, so you can take it as the official NZ government point of view.

I'd add that the Iraqi National Security Officer is either a total liar [likely] or a total idiot [also likely] and probably both. His description of Saddam during the process bore as much relationship to reality as the description by Saddam's PR bloke who said there were no Americans near Baghdad and they would be defeated and killed, [while American tanks drove around in the background during the interview].
