I sat in my library watching Charley as it made its way up the west coast of Florida heading towards Tampa Bay. That is, until it made an abrupt right turn and bombed (rapid increase in intensity) and headed right towards us. Too late to evacuate, I quickly tried to figure out how to get my disabled husband (who died a month later during an evacuation for H. Ivan) on the roof of our home if the surge came.

There was no way to know that Charley would turn like that. It was more of a super tornado than cane when it hit land but the damage was extensive. Fortunately is was a sparsely populated area of Florida contrasted with the Tampa or Miami-Palm Beach areas.

After that last post linked above, I again tried to awaken my husband, and called 911. He died on the way to the hospital. The stress of the many hurricanes was too much for him. Mike died 9/11/2004. Seven years later I have remarried, started a new business completely different from my old one and made and lost several millions in the market (but still way ahead of where I would have been) Silicon Investor is the site I go to each day still.

"But using the word "hype" IMHO is irresponsible"

Equally irresponsible is using "catastrophic", "once in a lifetime event",
"historic damage" to describe an obviously weakening system that never was
as powerful as the "weather experts" were reporting it to be ..

TWC is interviewing Jeff Morrow who is currently reporting from Atlantic Beach NC
right where the center of circulation is supposed to be .. Barely raining and winds in
the 30-40 mph range .. He stated that the maximum "gusts" were barely over 60 mph
and that was during the overnight period .. IRENE is a deteriorating tropical storm at
best right now and the people covering this know it .. BTW, I'm in sw CT right where
the center of circulation is supposed to be some time late Sunday .. Everyone here was
absolutley put in a frenzy by the sensational coverage of this "storm" .. Now the talking
heads on TWC are trying to report/find maximum "gusts" .. Gimme a break ..

Trust me .. next time .. everyone stays home ..

BTW we ( taxpayers ) pay the weater service a ton of money to
get the "facts" correct .. You can't say it was "blowing 50 mph all
night" in Atlantic Beach NC and still call it a "hurricane" ..

Triff ..
