No problem.... I'm enjoying the polite discussion of trade deficits.

I'm split on the issue but as a patriot, I hope Trump is successful for the good of the country. I think anyone who hopes he fails just to "prove he's an ass" or worse, is an ass wipe that should leave the country and never come back.

China looks at making jobs to build cities or electronics almost as we look at welfare payments. The difference is they get something for it, trained workers who only eat if they work while we get riots if the goodies are shut off or if the police, border patrol or other law enforcement agencies enforce the laws.

So, if we get $100 worth of steel for $50 and use it to make a washing machine with a nice profit margin, why not take all the subsidized steel we can get?

How do you compare sending high value chips to China for assembly at $2/hr then selling for an obscene markup by Apple to make the most money of any company in the World with sending us steel below cost?

It seems the same with autos. If Mexico can get workers to build them at $5/hr then we should build all we can there and let them worry about their retirement and health care... but we need closed borders to not let them come here to get the goodies.

This is ALL very cold but it is EXACTLY what Trump's critics want to continue. They want highly profitable US companies like Apple, Walmart, Macy's, Trump Ties, etc. that pay them speaking fees and campaign contributions to continue to profit off the backs of foreign AND US workers.

I guess what I am trying to say is it is near impossible for me to tell the difference between
  • tariffs
  • taxes (IF you import ALL your Walmart clothing, then CA's 9% sales tax IS a tariff on clothing)
  • subsidies for this or that industry
  • Free housing built by the government "make work" programs to build cities in China for future expansion.

Generally, I believe a FREE MARKET will work it all out and that is what Trump claims to want by eliminating ALL tariffs on imports.

Hi Pjr,

I agree completely with your response.

I think a lot of the trade imbalance was not just political incompetence.

For several decades the outsourcing of our manufacturing had the intended effect of downsizing unions . Unions that had greed overcrowding good business sense in many cases. The percent of workers in a union is now less than 7 % and many of the largest unions are with in the government - figures.

The shifting of manufacturing elsewhere - shipped a lot of pollution out of our water and air.

With the advent of Artificial Intelligence and how it will be coupled with robotics with the internet of things communicating down line in an robotic assembly line - much of that production will be cheaper to run, even cheaper than inhumanely low wages out in some sweat box factory in an emerging market .

Pollution devices have evolved and much of the "Dirty " manufacturing can be done here in the USA and not pollute like they do do in runaway pollution like we see in China! It is out air they are polluting also!

It will take time, and there will be lags.

It will slowly get the USA in a position of great self sufficiency.

It will slowly build the USA as a greater power house to respect and hopefully invite competition and global prosperity that exceeds our current poorly agreed to situation.

No other countries will not like it - much like a spoiled kid we're going to hear some whining from those who are on the sweet side of the deals and the politicians who received money to make it unfair - will lose that financial payola and be very critical of any moves that take money power away from them.

AFTERALL IT IS JUST PART OF DRAINING THE SWAMP - GOD'S SPEED !! DJT!!

Bob
