It would not be a first... I believe the government took equity in some firms during the financial collapse.

And it would sure beat dumping the oil on the ground like they are doing with milk...

One negative is the oil producers could argue the government caused the problem so any profits the government makes should be returned to them. Otherwise, the government would have incentive to put unfavored companies out of business like the communists then profit on their demise.
