Hi gregor,
I really want to know about the tithe. I'll concede that Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of the spoils. Then the tithe was later incorporated into the law. Then Jesus came and set us free from "the law of sin and of death." We now live under the law of grace,
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul; and love your neighbor as yourself."
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death."
Ananias & Safira dropped dead for lying to the Holy Spirit (testing God) not keeping back part of the money for the land.
Is seems to me that if God wanted the 10% to continue to be valid then He would have made that clear. It is not. The New Testament does not even touch on the subject. Is tithing 10% putting ourselves under the law again?

Phil. 4:19
"And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

Very interesting discussion, since I have been sitting now over a month, going, duh, I uh, duh, don't know where to, uh, send any money, Lord, and I'm, uh....

I'm uh, feeling like I better find out. I have learned too many times. With me, I pay my tithe usually repairing my truck. Another interesting phenomenon is the stolen wallet with money. This is no joke to me, and I thank you for bringing this up. Again interestingly, it was not too long ago I warned Bob S. about doing exactly what I'm doing now. Holding money in your checking account for the Lord doesn't seem to cut it.

The larger question is: "Do we selectively abrogate portions of the OT, especially when it comes to money?"
Jesus didn't come to eliminate the law, but to fulfill it.
Re. Money in the OT. We are dealing with principles. The 10% principle...the offering principle...were put there for our benefit as well as the benefit of the recipient. Giving helps balance out greed.
I went through an experiment many years ago when I changed jobs and went into some Christian ministry. With four children, I went from a very strong income for "that day" to $15.00 per week. It was a faith ministry, so to speak. I purposed I would "tithe" 51% of that on an experimental basis to see how God's supply would provide for our needs.
We survived!
People came to Christ.
I started getting "raises" that allowed us to make it okay.
My motto was a paraphrase from J. Hudson Taylor, the sensational and Godly missionary to China. His paraphrase from Phillipians 4:19 has been a model verse for me: "God's work, done in God's way, will never lack support."
It's the principle of giving that makes it work.
WARNING- In no way do I subscribe or endorse Bob Tilton's approach, however---that's not what I'm talking about.
More later.

Jack

PS
Congratulations on your new grandchild (picture was great) and your ministry of faith to the friend of your daughter. Praise be to God.

Barney,

<<In a previous post, you stated that when tithes are not given to God, that person is giving
the enemy permission to come and take it, and you and I agreed completely. Now,
when a person touches the holy tithe, in the OT a 1/5 or 20% penalty was paid or
added to it. So my question is , what is the penalty for touching the holy tithe, is it still
20%. In other words, if a person owes God $500.00 and doesn't pay it are you giving
the enemy permission to take the $500.00 in your possession and an additional
$100.00.>>

I don't think God is keeping track of the "mint and dill" the pharisees tithed, if you know what I mean. Jesus said that they tithed even from the plants of their gardens but they were dead even while they lived. The tithing could not buy them life!

I fell behind with my tithe last year and was praying to God to take my "promisary note" <ggg> like I owed God a certain dollar amount. His response stopped me cold. He was contemptuous of the idea of the money when I kept my heart to myself and did not draw close to Him. It was true that I had been very close to God but after marriage (as Paul explained) I had different priorities and slowly drifted farther and farther away. God set me straight in that instant.

I don't think there is any formula for tithing (giving) other than we are told to give, but there are many forms of giving and things that can be given, not just money. I have not tithed for almost a year now and I do not believe I have given the devil any authority to rob me of anything. He still makes the attempt but he fails as God gives the victory. My every need is still met and opportunity still arrives. If I have failed in my investments I attribute that to a lack of knowledge, and I was making plenty of poor investment decisions when my "tithe" was on time faithfully for years. I don't believe God measures any "tithe" in "mint and dill" but He is concerned with our hearts. He wants us to draw near to Him. That does not discount the tithing as being important, but it is tithing as an indication of the condition of the heart, faithfullness and reverence of the Lord. Those things are important. We are not under the law but under grace. God does not hold us accountable to the letter of the law any longer including in the area of tithing. It is this grace we are under that has freed us from the curse of the law. I feel that even though I have not been able to tithe for some time I and my family are under the protection of God's grace as we have always been. His mercy endures forever and "mercy triumphs over judgement".

In Jesus,

Bob
