James, I seriously doubt when most of the truth is known, 79% of the people will condone and support this behavior.

Decency is about having standards, and having the courage to stand up and say certain behavior is wrong.

Having sex with a 21 year old intern, in the workplace, in the highest office of the land, is reprehensible behavior.

That's the kind of behavior we should not tolerate. From anyone.

The one great thing about this country is no-one is above the law. Lying under oath is a criminal offense. Obfuscating justice is also a shameful and illegal act.

If 79% of the American people want to put there head in the sand and ignore it, then maybe they should take a hard look in the mirror and figure out what kind of country they want their children growing up in. Children, who have been taught right from wrong, clearly understand that lying is wrong.

I'm curios, why don't you?

Michael

James,

You apparently are older than I am, I noted you refering to yourself as grandpa. In that case I owe you the respect due your age.

That being said, I think it is important to realize that what ever can be said about Americans talking about the President, it is the president's character - or lack thereof - that has brought the denigration of his name down upon his head. He alone is to blame if the world is talking about the baser things that he practices.

He is the foremost public figure in the world. His character affects not just his life, his family's, or America's, but the world.

His life must be under scrutiny, his character must be beyond reproach lest we by his indecency and deception become the reproach that is due him.

We have every right to ask and even demand of our leaders that kind of accountability, if not we will not enjoy the freedoms so many have died to safe guard. Rather we will fall prey to the unbridled lusts of power hungry men and women who will stop at nothing to take what they can. History teaches that lesson better than I can.

Well, enough soap box for me.

regards

jim (young enough no doubt to be your grandson)

It would be best if you remember that

We are a nation of laws, not men

That means no one should be above the law not matter what their station in life is.

The Clintons apparently believe that they are above the law.

(Pardon M. Cummings, I now see that you have written much the same).

James,

This is the reason that 79% of Americans supports President Clinton. It's not about
sex, even violation of the law.

With great respect for your views, which, thank God, you are absolutely entitled to express in our wonderful country, please do not impugn the motives of all those who feel differently. Also please get a copy of Thursday's Wall Street Journal. The entire editorial page is set up like a comic strip with a chronology of Clinton's chicanery, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice. In all fairness, you owe it to yourself to read this, just as I read the Clinton supporters' opinions, although even the liberal Democrat columnists have for the most part turned on their "man", in the face of such overwhelming evidence of his lack of integrity.

Clinton's popularity, in my opinion, is high because of the "bull market", feel-good atmosphere throughout the land. A Republican, politically conservative doctor told me yesterday that he would vote for Clinton today if his pension plan would make as much profit next year as it had this year. So much for the ethics of the American citizen. But, what will happen to Clinton's popularity when the "mother of all stock market bubbles" pops? It's too late for Greenspan and associates to let it gently deflate, as they should have done several thousand Dow points ago. They ignored the lesson of the Japanese bubble experience. Now, at this lofty stage, with the specter of worldwide depression, war, revolution and ejection of current politicians hanging on the thin thread of the US market, they must be on their knees much of the time praying for a continuance of confidence. A sudden loss of confidence in the markets or the currency, and it's humpty-dumpty time. They hope to prolong the inevitable until someone else is in power and can take the rap.

But back to Mr. Clinton. The current political thought, as I read it, is the usual weasel-political thinking. So long as Clinton's popularity is high (for whatever reason) there will be no impeachment. The Republicans are too frightened to take the political risk of a possible failure of their impeachment proceedings, and the Democrats wouldn't think of it unless Clinton's popularity were to fall, in which case they would feign the high ground and turn on him. Notice that neither party considers what is right or wrong, just what is politically best for their own cowardly hides.

Meanwhile, Clinton prepares for war. For his part, he weaseled out of fighting an "unjust" war in Vietnam, but he has no qualms against sending my son or yours to fight in this "just" one, which, coincidentally, will deflect attention from his own peccadillos. It will also produce obligatory support from Republicans in Congress, and of course, from the public. They love a good war. They will sit in front of their TVs, beer in hand, and cheer those bombs just as they do a great football play. The men, women and children who are dismembered, scalded, and incinerated will not be shown, and Mr. Clinton will wipe a tear from his eye as our men and women are returned in body bags.

We need to get rid of the politicians and elect leaders. There is a difference.

Jack

Yes, nobody should be above the law, but nobody should be denied his/her human decency and dignity.

We are living a civilized society that requires everybody's decency and dignity to get protection equally. If this code is broken by any excuses, any individual rights can not be protected equally in this civilized society. I don't care who you are assaulting here, even Newt, I will stand up. Some people are trying to break this code like forcing mother against daughter or verse visa in the name of enforcing laws or gossiping an individual private personal life in the name of disagreement on some issues.

This is the reason that 79% of Americans supports President Clinton. It's not about sex, even violation of the law. It's about if basic decency and dignity of a human being should be respected. If we tolerate this kind of behavior, everybody will be subjected this kind insult in the future!!!
