Dear Pied:

All good points and am beginning to smell a little something rotten in the camp. You are right about the DT ISDN appeal as ISDN is much more pervasive in Europe than here. Also concerned whether these guys can live outside of government subsidy womb. Some of these fellows pumping the stock in here might have been yesterdays sellers in advance of the qrtr. warning see my other post.

Thanks for the light on the subject.

Regards,

JF Dowd

[some wrapping job]

greetings piper

have been meaning to get back to you, but have been somewhat distracted by events... and altho you've probably made yours on this one by now... <g> will respond anyhoo..

>>Orckit the GTE home team? Ahead of what schedule?<<

was actually referring to previous discussions with srvhap re. usa in general

>>I don't think the street figures out all these intricate little contract deals because the details are kept under wraps.<<

some wrapping job... what's the good doctor putting it at? $330/line (now that's a nice round number)... and we don't even have an announcement yet... but then again he wouldn't be interested in putting a little spin on this would he? <g>... didn't exactly follow his logic there... if the the clec business will have more lines deployed than the ilec by year end 1998... why's he so agitated? <g>

>>If the winner low balls the rest they better have a profitable solution in the LONG run or they are DEAD<<

agree.... but then orctf shouldn't have anything to worry about if this is just a hollow deployment <g> ... or is it that the problem is the other way around and there are a lot of lines involved and therefore orctf will lose that much more?<g>

>>Are you privy to Orckit's silicon solution? Its cost-effectiveness to say ALA or WSTL.<<

no... just kinda shooting my mouth off...... but figure wstl wanting to use first generation after proof-of-concept trials was some sort of vote of confidence <g>

>>Please enlighten the less informed. I like your thinking on such a day as this and would like a reason to buy beyond DT<<

buy? sounded like you rather had selling in mind... and how did sf get it wrong about csco taking this one? and what does dt have to do with this? <g>

and now what was that you were saying about... lu's long-term solution (> 18 mos.) without wstl... and Amati increasing chip power rqmts...like 8W!.. ;)... actually i am quite interested...

just funn'n

best o luck

[piper]

good afternoon piper

after a little rest thought i'd pull together a follow-on... i might have been a little quick there...... just needed to blow off some steam..

but your comments elsewhere about orctf coupled with your knowledge of the industry and forthcoming events... (winners/losers)...... did make your comments here seem a wee bit ingenuous...

as no doubt you've gathered, follow the wstl/pair threads (off and on) ... at first your name rang a bell, but i couldn't quite place it, but it had turned out i had flagged some of your posts... (for the good info)...

first let me say that early on it seemed like you took a lot of uncalled for grief for sticking you neck out and delivering some truth about mixed news... you were pretty straightforward... since then and your si probation/rebirth (?) ... seems like there are lines (criticism of certain co's) you are now careful not to step over... and am not quite sure what to make of it all..

for others who haven't seen these (piper's classics) :

WSTL cash CRISIS/ production (lu) problems/amtx silicon problems (feb 25)
Message 3523394

Seamans leaving/ some overblown pr/ a trial shipment for wstl(mar 5)
Message 3618500

LU 5ESS/wstl agmt. etc (mar 8)
Message 3644359

superfly... and gte rumblings (mar13)
Message 3707152

so back to a reasonable discussion:

spent some time a while ago comparing all info i could find on various adsl silicon... altho a little dated still more or less my thinking... and to spare everyone another endless post (jan 17):

Message 3193861

since then ti has announced some detail (believe component count roughly the same), mot might be back from the dead(?)... lu has announced g.lite chipset... and pair and rok have teamed up...

really don't know what to think about ala... new silicon seems like it's overdue... current stuff doesn't exactly seem to be getting raves..

and some thoughts on orctf positioning re. silicon/strategy (nov 3):
Message 2628287

would be interested in any comments/corrections to silicon stuff... and apparently wstl did want to use orctf first generation silicon for trials but orctf refused... still think silicon is the key for orctf and time will tell... but find partnerships with rok/harris/fujitsu encouraging, would not think these guys would be interested in sharing a partnership relationship if orctf didn't have some serious expertise to bring to the table...

for those who might be interested in how orctf is going to be a loser by winning-
dr. tech's posts:

"...hollow deployment attempt by the same old TElcos..."
Message 3941492

"GTE has chosen Orctf solution for two main reasons. Price ,and reluctance to upgrade their network backbone..."
Message 3942071

"...GTE does their Titanic box office impession of Adsl deployment however people that know the industry will see that their Orctf plans are a Tech path to keep them off Gilligan's island..."
Message 3942344

suspect that the reasons for fujitsu/orctf potential win given may well have some truth to them... but am inclined put a different spin there... as mentioned before, low price points don't necessarily have to mean inferior product... and

the "frame relay solution" doesn't necessarily have to mean fujitsu/orctf couldn't provide others.. and really wouldn't be surprised if the "frame relay" fujitsu/orctf solution which may be implimented wasn't tailored (recently) specifically for this potental rollout... such an explanation would fit with tamir's conference call comments...

still suspect this gte stuff has some history to it... and bareknuckle times seem to be upon us... and each is gonna have to decide what they think of orctf's chances on their own..... for this game is being played without a net and there are certainly no guarantees and there will plenty of nay-sayers...

best wishes
