My understanding is that you are exactly correct . . . the T decision was based on price and the only plausible suspect is LU . . . it looks like LU is trying to Microsoft their way to the top (without all the negative publicity)

Take emotions out. From research it looks like Lucent has 80 channel capabilities to offer vs Cienna 16 channel technology. Did anyone else catch that article or know more about this improved technology? Will smaller companies still be satisfied with 16 (such as Level 3) or are we seeing obsolescence ?

No Coincidence. AT&T was going with WaveStar since Jan 1998.

Lucent Technologies delivers record-breaking optical
networking capacity; five times greater than current systems

AT&T is first customer to deploy

FOR RELEASE: MONDAY JANUARY 26, 1998

MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies unveiled a global optical networking system that delivers five times the bandwidth of today's commercial fiber-optic systems. Lucent's system provides up to 400
gigabit-per-second capacity over a single strand of fiber -- equivalent to carrying the per-second traffic of the entire worldwide Internet over one fiber. AT&T will be the first to test and deploy the new system.

>>> Does anyone think the timing of the 2 AT&T announcements were just a coincidence? If so, I have some beautiful "waterfront" swamp...er...property in Florida to sell you.

The big disappointment in all of this is that Ciena management was:

A) Too stupid to know that ma bell was playing them for the fool and wasn't interested in doing business.

-or-

B) Knew all along that T was a lost cause but proceeded to mislead shareholders by giving the impression that everything was on
track.
