Divvie, Sorry to disappoint... My original post was:Message 5564395 Hey folks, OK.. not to create a host of anger but I do have a one question from which many more come. I have a number of folks tell me that I should be in Dell. (I confess, I wish I was during the past 2 weeks.) Nonetheless, I can see no compelling story with DELL. Isn't DELL just a distribution company? Responses were.. Invest in the stock, not the company - doesn't address the question. Message 5564582 Dell prices are better - not a differentiatorMessage 5564706 Something...I don't know what this guy meant.Message 5564784 Dell discounts, PC Magazine, warranty, etc.. and then he laughs at me for posting my question. Again, these are all replicable.Message 5567274 My fairly even response (given that I was being laughed at) to these posts...without attacks mentioning that I don't believe these above reasons are reasons why I pay more for a DELL machine or why they have a sustainable competitive advantage.Message 5573339 pricing is a VERY poor way to compete. It is easlily replicated. Question is where is DELL's value add....DELL's components are no different than any other manufacturer might or could use. Again...no barrier to entry. What keeps a wealthy businessman from coming in a copying DELL? Answer so far is NOTHING...... Of course the discussion went down the tubes for a while here and I took a pretty healthy shot from jbn3...Message 5575274 ...calling me ignorant among other things. I don't think given my response above this was deserved... I asked jbn3 to calm down and suggested we have an adult discussion..Message 5575878 LongonDell then came riding in asking me to explain why competitors haven't succeeded up to now...completely moving the conversation down a rat hole. Note that up to this point I had not attacked anyone and continued to attempt to understand DELL's percieved market dominance through all the clutter of responses...some of them good...some of them poor..and some of them personal attacks simply because I asked the question... I them attempted to extricate myself by sayingI want to thank you for the responses to my initial question regarding DELL and it's business practices. It's fairly clear to me that although DELL has indeed perfected JIT and customer service practices that they really do not have any inherent value add which can not be emulated by someone with reasonable capital. Message 5574545 I received some pretty level responses suggesting that I would "miss out... However LongonDell came after me after this post. I thanked a number of people privately for their input. I however also noticed that there are many on that thread that took exception to my not investing. As for my parting shot to chuzzlewit...perhaps you should follow that string as well. My conversations with him, LongonDell, and jbn3 were clear indications that anyone who doesn't view DELL as owning the PC/server market by 2000 is not welcome. Regardless of their research. I posted very sane arguments which perhaps need more substantial factoids (I'm investigating these in my free time) to support my case. These were not favorably viewed and it was clear that after a few day's the entertainment value of my questions got old and folks started getting irritated that I was questioning their investment. Ah well. I'm off. I've already wasted too much of my time here. OG
