Lynn: Nice piece of detective work. In the UK they feature the free offer prominently. They give the impresion that they have their own IP.

Lynn,
Nice research on Gateway free internet service. The offer amounts to nothing.

I've been traveling all day. Wish I had gone to bed rather then peeking at the market action and seeing this.

Merrill Lynch computer analyst Steve Milunovich cut his 1Q
earnings estimate for COMPAQ COMPUTER (35, down 6 @ 9:47 ET) to
$0.30 per share from $0.35 per share previously, his office said
on Friday. No further details were immediately available. The move
comes a day after Milunovich commented in a research note that the
PC industry's long-term revenue growth rates may be slowed by
price wars and growing customer demand for lower-priced computer
systems. He said the trend could spell trouble for Compaq rival
Dell Computer Corp. However, he had noted that PC demand and
stocks "should be fine in the near term." Milunovich has held a
neutral rating on Compaq.

I agree. GTW could have a real PR dilemma if a majority of customers have no local access number for the dial-in connection. A happy customer will tell 5 people and a dissatisfied one will tell 20.
