Breakthrough Signal Processing Technology Delivers Two-Way
Broadcast-Quality Video to the Desktop Using Existing Telephone
Wiring

Revolutionary Technology Delivers High Bandwidth to the Desktop

For Simultaneous Video and Data Communications

CHANTILLY, Va., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Objective Communications, Inc., has unveiled a
patented signal processing technology for distributing broadcast quality, bi-directional video
communications capabilities to the desktop. The technology, called VidModem, is the first to
provide simultaneous, two-way, video, CD quality stereo audio, and high-speed data
communications over the single unshielded twisted pair telephony wiring already in the enterprise.

VidModem incorporates an analog FM signal processor invented by Dr. John Gerig and
Objective's founder and president, Steven Rogers, whose development work on VidModem has
earned him his sixth patent. The VidModem technology fulfills a long sought goal in the
telecommunications industry: finding a cost-effective method of delivering two-way
broadcast-quality video and CD- quality stereo audio to the desktop without having to rewire the
building or interfere with the local area network.

"All other video communications vendors are attempting to move large packets of video and data
along computer networks or trying to make use of a so-called 'unused' pair required for future
LAN use," said Rogers. "That approach either slows your network to a crawl or, at the very least,
forces you to rewire. Our goal was to create a technology that takes advantage of an
under-utilized network already in place: the twisted pair wire that uses the telephone."

VidModem distributes broadcast quality video from COAX, DSS or other satellite connections
and video conferencing capability via ISDN or ATM, to the desktop or to conference rooms. All
of these signals are transmitted bi- directionally throughout the organization using the existing
telephone wire -- the same wire pair that connects to the telephone.

"It's clear that once tools such as the VidModem are widely deployed, visual collaboration will be
enhanced and business practices can be streamlined," stated Christine Perey, a prominent video
analyst and a contributing editor of Desktop Video Communications (DVC) magazine. "In the 21st
Century, technology like this will be common place. Colleagues will casually recall the days when
they negotiated terms and built alliances with those they could only hear on their telephones."

Using the existing telephony wiring, VidModem allows users to simultaneously:

* Receive television network broadcasts at the desktop

* Access and retrieve stored video materials for training,

presentations, etc.

* Conduct two-way, multi-party broadcast-quality video conferencing

* Make and receive telephone calls

* Access, share and edit data files

"Most MIS managers are reluctant to allocate part of their local area network bandwidth to video
images, because of the potential bottlenecks," said Bettina Tratz-Ryan, a video market analyst with
Frost & Sullivan. "VidModem is unique in its ability to deliver full motion, high-quality images
without having to dip into the LAN. It is an impressive technical achievement that the same two
wires from the telephone are also delivering video of this quality."

Objective currently has demonstration system installations at the offices of major long distance
carriers, telecommunications equipment manufacturers, integration and sales companies, Bell
Operating Companies and the Federal Government.

"The VidModem technology has been thoroughly tested in our labs. As the only viable solution for
in-building distribution of integrated video, audio and data communications over a single pair, it is a
natural extension of the ATM wide area video capability," said Charles P. Johnson, Chairman and
CEO, General DataComm, a leading ATM switch manufacturer.

VidModem is fully compatible with all digital and analog business telephone systems.

Availability

A system based on the VidModem technology, including proprietary modems and a broadband
switch, will be ready for commercial shipment in the fourth quarter of 1997. The system will
deliver broadcast quality video normally associated with high end satellite video systems for a
price-per-desktop closer to lower-end ISDN-based video systems.
