This thread will be dedicated to Next Generation Internet (NGI), Internet2, and other video networks and providers. Currently this is an infant industry, but it is growing quickly (8 billion). NGI is a high bandwith network deployed by service providers and the like to carry voice video and data. Internet 2 is an alliance between universties to provide faster communications for better education. The networking products are made by the big boys, of course, but I would like to keep this thread dedicated to the small players that are first developing. The official internet site of NGI is ngi.gov The official site for Internet2 is internet2.edu Here are some companies to think about: Picturetel (PCTL) they make video conferencing systems. PCTL was the the old heavy hitter in the industry. Now has growth problems. First Virtual Co. (FVCX) they make the networking hardware and are installing systems for NGI. Contracts with British Airways, two California school districts, several government agencies, the city of New York, and others. Polycom (PLCM) they make video networking solutions for meetings. Surpassed PCTL in their market segment for the number one spot during the second quarter. Sales growing quickly. VTEL (VTEL) makes video conferencing systems. PLCM bought out a key competitor and VTEL is suing PLCM over former employees working at PLCM now. VTEL has growth problems and is laying off 15% of workforce. ACT Teleconferencing (ACTT) small player, but sales are growing rapidly. Just signed a distribution with Toyoda Machinery USA. Yet to be profitable Able Telecom Holding (ABTE) rapidly growing video networking company. Has some large contracts, and has had some nice profits. Sharholders are currently suing the company for several reasons. PCTL, PLCM, ABTE, and FVCX were all profitable in their last quarter. PLCM, ABTE, and FVCX's profits are growing rapidly. Eventually, though, the growth will slow after the accumulated loss tax advantage dries up. VTEL has been profitable but posted a .30 loss last quarter. ACTT has yet to be profitable. The big boys in video conferencing: Most of these companies provide the equipment and compete with the little boys. Others supply the litte boys and help them out. MMM-holds a stake in FVCX, MSFT, INTC-wants to enter networking as another product line, CSCO-tends to compete with or buy out smaller companies, ASND-tends to partner with, instead of compete with the smaller companies, LU, BEL, BTY-main British company, FTE-main French company, EDS, NT-main Canadian player, NIPNY, IBM, BAY, HS-distributing in Latin America for PLCM, FORE, NOVL, CS, MCI, NN, QWST, and others. The privately held companies: Torrent Networking Technologies Packet Engines Inc. Starburst Communications BBN Systems & Technologies Ipsilon Networks Teledesic Zydacron Well that's enough for this opening. There is what I want to talk about, mainly the small players, as that is where the potential to make money remains. I'd like to know other small players, mainly those with 1 billion or less in revenues per year. Currently I am looking to buy FVCX if the time is right. | ||||||||||||
