Thermolase Corporation is one of ThermoElectron's subsidiaries and has taken military laser technology and adapted it to removing unwanted hair. The technology has a major competitive advantage over the traditional electrolysis methodology because it can remove unwanted hair from entire regions of the body painlessly. Electrolysis on the other hand, has to painfully go from pore to pore to kill roots. Thermolase has opened its first spa in La Jolla, CA which has been met with tremendous success. It is anticipated to generate $3-$5MM in the first year even though they are limiting traffic to ensure top customer service. They have also recently signed contracts to open up salons in Dallas, Beverly Hills, Denver, and Tokyo. Those salons will be up and running by the fall. Finally, they have announced their decision to license the technology to doctors (dermatologists, skin-care specialists) to use as well. The spas are designed to hit the high-end market while the dermatologists are designed to hit the middle-end market. I'm projecting that this company, with currently a negaive P/E and low gross sales, will blossom into a $500MM business within 5 years. Check it out. Thermolase Corporation (AMEX: TLZ).
