Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) provides public international telecommunications services in India. These services directly and indirectly link the Indian domestic telecommunications network to approximately 237 international destinations. The company offers basic, and specialized and value-added services. Basic services include international switched telephone services, including voice, facsimile, and data transmission services; and international telex services, including automatic direct dial telex service; and national long distance services. Specialized and value-added services include international leased lines, Internet telephony, satellite mobile telecommunications, Internet dial-up access, Internet leased line access, electronic data interchange, managed data network services, national long distance, broadband services, video conferencing, transmission of television signals, packet switched data transmission, and e-mail services. As of March 31, 2004, the company operated 12 international switching and transmission facilities for voice, as well as integrated services digital network services at 8 gateways in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Ernakulam, Gandhinagar, Jalandhar, and Kanpur. VSNL was formed as the successor to Overseas Communications Service in 1986. The company is based in Mumbai, India. The company launched its global calling card in Sri Lanka in February 2005.
VSNL is a part of the Tata Group. It acquired Teleglobe for about $239 millionand in July 2005 and Tyco Global Network for $130 million in 2004.
