Bob,
This is a very sad day for SI. The management at INSP has consistently demonstrated that they are not in touch with their users/content providers and you were the one person who we knew at INSP who was also part of the overall SI community.

You have my deepest respect and I wish you prosperity in your future endeavors.

It will be sad watching the inevitable decay of SI.

I am so sorry to see you go Bob. You have been the one and only "face" of SI that is a bright shining light. You've kept this community together better than anyone else.

I am so disappointed....and very very sad.

Good luck to you and please stay in touch with us.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Bob It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

This may be the best thing that ever happened to you while at this time appearing to be the worst.

Now may be your chance to start your own project, which you were well on your way to doing, when you first started in business with two brothers.

SI will never be the same without you, and I do mean never!
CFOs may be replaced at the drop of a stock price, but short little blue guys with a badge, are one in a million.

Jump on your tractor, crank up your boom box, and think great thoughts like you always do. Go meet with the two brothers and come up with a new idea, and when you do, please let me in on it!

Green Acres is the place for me!!!!

All my best, and please don't leave us entirely....

Sorry, Bob. It was a tough job, maybe the next one will be more fun. I hope this was strictly a business matter, from the chart INSP looks like yet another sick internet venture.

In tribute, I dug up this link.

The Moderator wsj.com Bob Zumbrunnen makes sure online chat stays on topic and helpful. Sometimes, he has to play rough

Mr. Zumbrunnen stresses that the site is much less troublesome than it was
when he started there two years ago, mostly because of the strict
enforcement of the site's rules.

Where's the proof? Threats of murder have tapered off.

"There was a time when people were sending death threats to people who
disliked their stocks," Mr. Zumbrunnen recalls of his early days at Silicon
Investor. "'Stop posting, or you will die,'" they would write to each other.

None of the threats have been directed at Mr. Zumbrunnen, though
investors who take risks they can't afford have been known to get
hotheaded, especially if they're banned from a site for which they've paid.
That's part of the reason Mr. Zumbrunnen won't say exactly where he
lives.

-Win.

shelter from the storm
(excerpt)

twas in another lifetime
one of toil and blood
when blackness was a virtue
the road was full of mud
i came in from the wilderness
a creature void of form
"come in," she said
"i'll give ya
shelter from the storm"

and if i pass this way again
you can rest assured
i'll always do my best for her
on that i give my word
in a world of steel-eyed death and men
who are fighting to be warm
"come in," she said
"i'll give ya
shelter from the storm"

Bob, my best wishes to you! I am sure that you will have no problem finding work, as there is still life outside of .com. I'm sure you have developed some very valuable skills while at SI, including that Perl-coding skill, which is, surprisingly, in great demand in NON Internet applications.

If you haven't before, now might be a great time to try contracting. (As I have been doing for the last 10 years.) My contacts at the various agencies tell me that demand for contractors is UP due to companies being so reluctant to hire-on permanent employees right now. If you want any pointers, feel free to send me a private message.

BTW, having been at a number of companies that were cutting back, and at times being among those cut and at other times among those that were not cut - believe me, you are in a happier position than those you left behind. :)

1. Consider the layoff a "kiss". It will motivate you to find a job with a company that has a future. Being Captain of the Titanic is not a very good deal.

2. Now I understand why Mike Coddington has been so distant and unresponsive. He was brought on board to disassemble SI, not to grow it.

3. Thanks for your contributions, which went far beyond those called for in your job descriptions. You've earned the respect of everyone you've worked with (well, almost <lol>).

Wow, I'm really stunned, I'd believed that SI could remain a quality discussion board but having been in a major company and seen so many good, committed people let go I shouldn't be surprised after all.

Doesn't seem a good omen for the continued health of SI, if it can even continue to exist after this. I can hardly put an accurate value on the amount I've learned in so short a time here.

SI really seems irreplaceable, this just sucks bigtime.

My sincere best wishes wherever you may end up in the future.

"Success did not come easily to her, however. Before launching her signature talk show on Oct. 17, 1983, she worked as a radio and television broadcaster in 24 cities...and was fired 18 times. She tried out for 142 commercial voice-overs...and never landed one. Still, what Raphaël lacked in job stability and money, she made up for in self-confidence. Each time a pink slip landed on her desk, she would just pack up the family and move to a different city in search of another job."

But I have to tell you something..

Finding a reprimand in my inbox from you on Saturday morning's was usually the highlight of my week. It meant I started a fire and you showed up with the red hat..

I cannot express in words how crestfallen I am at recent events here at SI. I sorry to say it but I'm not sure how much longer SI can function as a going concern if this is the direction they are taking.

You have touched a lot of people here in your 4+ years.. I am privileged to be one of them.

Inconsolably yours;

Bob,

Words fail me as well.

I paid for my lifetime SI membership several years ago now. I have watched, mostly silently, as many of the good things that attracted me to SI were slowly changing or disappearing altogether.

The first disappointment was in losing the Dryers as consultants, or whatever their capacity was after SI was sold. Losing Jill from the community hurt as well, but not as badly because she was moving on with her life and things were looking up for her. When it became known that Classic SI would be replaced, the handwriting was on the wall as far as I was concerned. I noticed that we started to lose many good posters, people that I didn't really know, but somehow seemed to know them via their virtual personalties. People like Kevin Watson or Josef Svejk are hard to find. While Kevin has recently started posting again on SI, Josef has not.

And now we lose you, at least in the capacity of an administrator. The powers that be at Infospace are destroying our little community. And that's a shame. A pox on them for their insensitive actions and utter stupidity. Executives such as they are the primary reason most of the dot coms have failed. They have no sense of pride, no sense of community, and are completely without the scruples that most folks are born with. If I could get a borrow, I'd institute a terminal short tomorrow.

Business and chat boards apparently don't mix. The powers that be haven't figured out yet how to tap their posting community for enough dollars to keep the sites operational. They definitely haven't figured out yet how to keep their posters happy. I think that this action by INSP is a predictor of the inevitable. Some day soon I suspect that SI will become a part of Internet history. The fine ideas that have been fostered here, the many cyber-friendships that have evolved, the sense of belonging to a community will cease.

It didn't have to end this way.

Kerry

The person behind OpenBSD is fearful of just that. He has been approached by many to take his software public, etc, but he refuses as the corporate world will end up sacrificing quality for dollars. Thus the program remains free and rock solid secure:

The Legend of SI BOB...

Long ago, and far away, back in the mists of time many eons ago...there existed a strange and wonderful long-forgotten kingdom known as SI.

There also existed a great being (whose presence was invisible and omnipotent), who roamed the mysterious cyberspace world of this kingdom...the inhabitants of which were known as "Posters" (some even rising the the exalted, or infamous, level of "PeopleMarks"). Their posting communities, were known as "Threads" (the most outstanding had become "SubjectMarks"), were famous throughout all of cyberspace, for their incredible civility, wit, and most especially...intelligence and great wisdom.

SI BOB was a creature who gently, but firmly, oversaw this great kingdom with much kindness, civility, honesty, and fairness. And all of those who inhabited the kingdom were expected to behave with those same values towards their fellow inhabitants, the other "Posters"...no matter what their status was within the kingdom.

Occasionally he would have to reprimand or sanction someone in his kingdom, for either a minor or major violation of their Constitution, commonly known by the beloved nickname of "TOU." On the very rarest of occasions, when one of the kingdom's inhabitants behaved in a manner so egregious as to be way beyond any form of acceptable behavior, he could (with one swift click of his mighty mouse) banish that evil-doer from the kingdom forever...usually to the cheers of the other "Posters." But mostly he just helped anyone who needed assistance, with great intelligence, eloquence, good humor...and above all, grace.

This ancient WSJ article is an early documentation of his legendary status:
wsj.com

But then one day...SI BOB was gone. The Subject(Mark)s of his kingdom arose almost in unison, crying out for his return. Even many whom had once received his gentle reprimands greatly respected him, and demanded his return. It was an amazing site to behold. The old-timers would say for decades to come, "You just had to be there to see the outcries for yourself." It even hit No.1 on the kingdom's "HotSubjects." But, it was all to no avail. Some believe that he had been banished from the kingdom by three powers even greater than he was...The powers of "Money," "Greed," and "Absolute Stupidity"...But we may never know for sure.

And all those who ever hear the tale in the eons to come,
will continue to tell the story of The Legend of SI BOB...
with reverence...and a good frosty beer...

Always ending with this simple prayer...
"Goodnight, and good luck SI BOB...wherever you are.
We will always miss you."

Roger

Hi Bob - judging from your background and abilities [in Perl script etc] probably INSP was only one of your many employment options, that led me to speculate you enjoy working the SI crowd as much as SI crowd has enjoyed your invisible presence. So, this is indeed an unpleasant turn of events. However, maybe this is also an oppty for you to advance to the next level of challenge. To say the least, your reaction is indicative of your integrity. So I salute you

best, Bosco

Bob,

While I'll no longer be a SI fugitive, living in paranoia trying to evade from the Gestapo like clutches of SI Bob, you will be missed. Your presence on SI was a pleasant reminder of the good old school days when we'd sit in the back of the class trying to figure out just how much fooling around we could do before we would raise the ire of the teacher and get into trouble.

Good luck to you, and I assure you no hard feelings on my part.

PS - BTW, did you really have to remove the Dagan Santiago thread? I thought it was hilarious <ggg>!

Bob,

I am very sorry to hear this news.

You will be missed.

I'm rather surprised this happened, because you represent the core of SI community. Your departure makes me question INSP's motivations and intentions around SI. For a company whose loss exceeds its revenue, your departure may be a blessing for you, but a loss for us.

You provided a lot of level-headed guidance to the Threads and made SI a very valuable place to exchange educational information.

If you feel that INSP is not interested in keeping SI operational, rather than INSP simply shutting SI down (which would be a loss for everyone, including INSP shareholders), may I suggest you consider offering a deal to INSP's management along the lines of taking over SI yourself for a certain amount of equity? If INSP's management ignores your offer or is too busy to consider the merits of it, you could make an offer directly to the BODs since Board members have a fiduciary obligation to consider offers.

I've heard of these types deals in Silicon Valley, where an employee is very motivated towards a particular aspect of a company (in this case, say SI), and will offer to take over that aspect of the company, separate it from the company (as a spin-off), and thus, release INSP from their obligations, yet, this also provides a way for INSP to enjoy gains if you are successful. It is a better alternative than shutting SI down (I'm not implying INSP intends to shut SI down, but it could be an eventual possibility if it drifts). Such an arrangement could provide you with a quick way to launch a company that already has the infrastructure built up and a pretty loyal customer base, and a way for INSP to focus on alternative strategies, yet potentially gain from SI.

Hope you let us all know your eventual plans. Please keep in touch. Again, sorry to hear the news about your departure. You are valuable to the SI community.

Best regards,
Amy J

Bob:

The number of heartfelt and well-wishing responses to your post say it all, and I add my own best wishes to the list. I've been an SI member since I first became a self-directed investor in 1996, and it has been (and remains) the single most useful and timely source of information, opinion, news, and analysis that I use daily in support of my decisions.

The business model supporting SI (if there is one) has long puzzled me. I pay over $100/month to Quote.com for real time market feed and data, $13/month to Stocksmart.com for the stuff on their site, and I have subscriptions to several financial journals and newsletters. I'd sure pay a monthly fee to support SI and keep it running, and it could well be a better site if people had to pay to use it. The people running INSP just don't seem to have much idea of how to capitalize on the asset they have.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do next.

David T.

Bob-

You've given...given nobly and from your heart. This is indeed a VERY GOOD COMMUNITY. Take that for granted and you take the best of life for granted.

Thank you, thank you for your efforts, sir.

Just realized I missed the anniversary of my getting laid off. Oh, well. Been too busy. Was a tough time at the time, but in hindsight I'm awfully glad it happened.

Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about
Well the names haven't all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

We always could spot a friend, welcome back
And I smile when I think how you must have been
And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

Yeah we tease him a lot, welcome back, welcome back
Cause we got him on the spot, welcome back, welcome back

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

Thanks for helping me find this post, KLP.

Wow! A long road with a fitting and definitely ironic end.

I am no longer employed by Silicon Investor.

My, how different things are 27 months later.

If I didn't mention it, I also have a copy of the Seattle paper with Naveen's picture and the story about the INSP lawsuit against him as the headline. I'd just signed the papers and was out having a much-needed smoke and saw Mr. Jain's face looking at me from the newspaper vending machine, chuckled at the rich irony, and bought a copy to bring home. It's getting framed along with the pen I used for the contracts.

I'm a sucker for keepsakes.
