AMD's 1.3-GHz Athlon Bests Fastest Pentiums

John; More positive feedback from another reviewer, this one is a more mainstream one.
-----------------------------------

Advanced Micro Devices launches its 1.3-GHz Athlon processor today, and
tests of the first systems available demonstrate a burst of speed that in
many cases surpasses Intel's 1.5-GHz Pentium 4.

While AMD's flagship chip still trails Intel's 1.5-GHz Pentium 4 in terms of
raw megahertz, exclusive PC World Test Center evaluations show systems
using the AMD processor paired with double data rate memory easily
outperform comparable systems with the P4 and Rambus (RDRAM)
memory in most tests.
The first systems running AMD's 1.2-GHz Athlon and
DDR also outperformed P4 systems on most benchmarks, with the major
exception being video encoding tasks where the Pentium 4 tends to shine.

The 1.3-GHz Athlon is the first speed increase for the chip since last
October. Early systems were tested and are available now from several
smaller vendors, including Polywell, Tangent Computer, and MicroExpress.
Systems will also be available from majors such as Compaq,
Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, and Micron as well.

John,

One possibility of pairing Palomino with 760 MP IMO is that maybe 760 MP has PowerNow, while none of the existing chips do (I don't know about ALI). KT-266 may have PowerNow support as well.

One question I have is if Palomino can work on just any Socket A board without PowerNow enabled.

Can you clarify something for me?
These new 1.3 and 1.33 Ghz Athlons are a new T-bird stepping, not a new stepping or are Palomino?

If they are not Palomino, maybe AMD is having trouble trying to stick too many features on Palomino at once?

Jim

Petz, Re: To me, the chipset explanation makes the most sense. DId you notice that when the first Palominos are released in Q2, they will be paired with AMD's newest chipset only -- the 760MP?

Yes, this could be one (relatively plausible) explanation. I saw on Techannel that the 1.53 GHz Palomino used a Gigabyte GA7DX board in revision 3.0. Probably it won't work with an earlier revision. Or maybe this is just a coincidence. I'll ask AMD tomorrow at CeBIT about the infrastructure but probably they won't say anything substantial.
