Are there any other countries where non-citizens have the right to vote??

Should people automatically receive citizenship, or hold public office merely because they pay taxes??

They way I figure it, if you want to vote, become a citizen...

Kumara, "No taxation without representation" was the catchcry by the American Revolutionaries. They [their descendants] have forgotten their slogan. And a lot more besides ... sadly...

Actually, that might not be what the catchcry was, but it fits what I want to say. Hehheh!!

There are many more matters influenced by voting than just taxes. Taking up citizenship (and renouncing your previous citizenship) indicates a much deeper level of commitment to the US than simply being here.

>>I tend to agree. we pay taxes, why not have a say in how those tax $s are spent ?<<

I was very surprised to learn, recently, that this issue isn't provided for in the Constitution.

After thinking about it for a while I realized that the Founding Fathers did not really care where you were from (although you have to be native born to be President). If you were in America, and said you were American, that was good enough for them.

I do think there should be some standard for voting, but maybe a green card and a year's legal residence would do, at least for local elections.

No taxation without representation, and all that.
