If Apple's recovery was as spectacular as Phil thinks it'll be then there would be nothing stopping him from taking the CEO position and all the credit, to the benefit of his big ego.

If he is still hesitant is because he must see big hazards ahead.

Unless, of course, he doesn't care about taking the credit. Remember, he has Pixar to stroke his ego right now. Apple is a labor of love, and he can be much more fickle in how he handles matters there. It's icing on the cake.

Geez, people...let your emotions inform your intellect now and again.

Mark

Alomex: I believed that he didn't want the job because of his devotion to his family and to Pixar, just as he said. When I hear that he has asked for several offers of money, I feel I was quite naive. If a few million dollars more or less would make the difference between his taking the job or not, I'm confused. He is so wealthy and he sold his stock cheaply, well before that keynote address that blew the stock to 30. So, I end up feeling, like Phil, that he wants to take the job only if he's sure he can make a success of it, and that he's been waffling during this time till he could be sure Apple can make it. Frankly, I'm not sure it can make it without him, so I surely do hope he will take the job.

The negatives that the nay-sayers bring here are some that we've all noticed. A lot of big companies that were Mac have gone to PC. The magazines merged. So, it will take a lot to turn the tide again. I don't know if there's anyone who could do it but Steve Jobs and I believe he'll only take the job if he's sure he can succeed this time around.

Linda

Oh, come on, I can't believe your lack of common sense. An Apple spokeswoman has already said that they will announce the permanent CEO when "he is actually *hired*", is that clear to you? Of course Steve Jobs will be CEO!, just *look at the management team* right now, Next people everywhere, and why did they hire Timothy Cook if this management team intends to leave? It's all too clear. But, the announcement will come either on april 15 or on april 22, because the shareholders will have to vote before he is hired

What drives Jobs to become Apple CEO ? - Ego: he wants to prove that he was ousted out of Apple wrongly - Probably not money. He is already a billionaire, and he could probably earns more, and with less hassle by founding his own company, or by leveraging Pixar - make the next insanely great thing. Like he did once with Apple, once and a half with Next and twice with Pixar. But what will be next? Certainly not to wait to see any increase in PowerPc Mhz. Maybe to see Rhapsody become a major player, but there is a hard way to go, and it is a bit technical. Computer is more and more looking like a mature industry. I feel S. Jobs want to output a great new consumer device, that will spread anywhere. He will stay in Apple to do that, if he thinks he has the freedom to. He really doesn't want to manage inventories and plan obsolescence a la Intel or microsoft. Wether he will succeed is not guaranteed, since Apple and himself aren't very experienced in this field. So I don't think the absence of decision can be related to the quarter performance

- Not necessarily. Remember he is *supposed* to be running Pixar, as well as paying some attention to his family!!!

Alomex,

He could and should see big hazards ahead. We all know that they are there and would hope that the steering committee can sail the big AAPL through.

Steve could see a rewarding quarter and a promising future for "the beleaguered computer maker." For that reason, he may want to see his work as already accomplished except for tying up a few loose ends. He has said that he does not want to be Apple's CEO (period). Of course then he vacillated a few times.

Put yourself in his shoes. You're wealthy beyond belief. You want the "change the world" enterprise you started to survive into the next millennium and beyond. And, you want to enjoy your family and other life's successes.

That he does not want the job has little if any indication of Apple's strength.

Good cider,
HerbVic
