"Clarent is bent on keeping information moving. The company makes Internet-based telephony systems that transfer voice, data, and faxes. Its products use packet-switched technology, which breaks information into pieces, transmits it, and reassembles it at its destination -- using network space more efficiently than traditional circuit systems because it takes up space on a network only during transmission, instead of for the duration of the call. The company sells primarily to telecommunications service providers such as AT&T (36% of sales) and Star Telecommunications, but it also makes Internet telephony products for use in business networks. Customers outside the US account for about half of sales."
