George Gilder has recently written that photonics will soon be to communication what electronics are to computers. I dedicate this thread to the quest for promising investments in the photonics and optic-electronic industries. The largest IPO in history came public recently with Ciena being awarded a market cap of nearly $4 billion, in spite of its short operating history and minimal profits. What Ciena offers is a technology known as WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) that permits a sixteen-fold increase in the bandwidth of single-mode fiber. But while Ciena has some good contracts with telecommunications carriers, it is by no means the only player in WDM space. Lucent, Alcatel, Corning, Uniphase, SDL and others are very active in this area as well. I would like this thread to become a gathering place for objective information as well as subjective interpretation and analysis focusing on the entire fiberspace arena. SC | ||||||||||||||
