The vendors of HFC-based internet access have been rolling out their services since late last year. @Home is preparing an IPO of 8% of its shares, and is controlled by TCOMA (~26% after IPO), with investment by other CATV companies and hardware vendors. Road Runner is Time Warner's (TWX) product, and MediaOne Express is U S WEST Media Group's (UMG). Last reported customer counts put subscribers at 4-5k for each, but new installations are proceeding apace. I'd like this to be a discussion of the quality of service received by actual subscribers, with a focus on the limitations and any failures to meet expectations. I'd like to get an idea after a while of who of the above is implementing well, and who is doing poorly. It's expected that, "Wow! This is much faster than 28.8!" Otherwise, why would you pay the extra bucks? Or does it really cost more than a dial-up service, when you're not tying up your phone line? Are there any other features besides speed that have surprised?
